Kingwood officials provide updates on Lake Houston Dam, Northpark Drive at District E town hall

During a Sept. 22 town hall held by Houston City Council member Fred Flickinger, officials provided updates on several Kingwood-specific projects.

In case you missed it:

  • The Lake Houston Dam Spillway Improvement Project is about 90% through the design process. Construction is expected to start in the second quarter of 2028 and finish by the end of 2030. The estimated $315 million project currently has a funding gap of roughly $195 million.

  • The $76.8 million Northpark Drive Overpass project is about 75% complete and is expected to be substantially finished by April. Phase 2 of the project is about 30% through the design phase.

  • Houston Fire Department Station 101 is expected to reopen in Kingwood at the end of September after being closed for mold abatement and asbestos.

  • The newly expanded Terminal B at George Bush Intercontinental Airport will welcome its first flights Oct. 22 through a $2.55 billion partnership with United Airlines.

Golden Root Academy & Respite Center to open in September

The women-owned and -operated Golden Root Academy & Respite Center is expected to open in September, according to information on the center's Facebook page. The school, located at 18003 Lago Forest Drive in Humble, was originally expected to open in August.

What they offer: The facility will serve children ages 6 weeks to 12 years and will offer the following services:

  • Full-time preschool

  • Part-time preschool

  • Before-school care options

  • After-school care options

Greater Houston area home sales on the decline

According to the August monthly housing update from the Houston Association of Realtors, the number of single-family home sales has decreased by 11.5% across the Greater Houston region.

The breakdown: With the decrease in single-family home sales, affordability rates for homeowners saw year-over-year growth for 22 of the last 25 months, HAR data shows. The nationwide growth rate stood at 15 out of the last 25 months.

When compared to single-family home sales in 2019, the 2026 market has seen a 20.1% decrease overall.

In their words: “Buyers have more options and more time to make decisions, while sellers continue to benefit from relatively stable prices," HAR Chair Theresa Hill with Compass RE Texas, LLC - Houston said. "That's a healthier environment for consumers and a positive sign for the long-term strength of our market.”

Greenspoint Mall Site to redevelop to $150M CityNorth Industrial Park

Investment companies Lincoln and New York Life announced a partnership and acquisition of the former Greenspoint Mall site to redevelop the property. The 80-acre site will become CityNorth Industrial Park, a 1.2 million-square-foot development designed to serve the logistics and industrial demand in Greater Houston.

The details: Key details of the redevelopment project include:

  • Demolition on the site is expected to begin in October.

  • The site will house cross-dock and rear-load industrial buildings alongside retail and service uses.

  • The development is estimated to accommodate 1,200 full-time jobs upon completion.

  • The first phase of construction is expected to be complete in the first quarter of 2028.
