McKinney ISD leaders form new attendance zones following campus repurposing decision

New attendance zone boundaries will be in effect for McKinney ISD students in the 2026-27 school year following action by the district’s elected leadership.

The MISD board of trustees approved new boundary maps for the elementary, middle and high school levels at a Dec. 15 meeting. The change comes just over a month after board members approved the closure and repurposing of three district elementary schools, which is also effective for the 2026-27 school year.

The specifics: The elementary school attendance map selected, dubbed Map 4, reflects the planned closure of three elementary schools. Attendance zones in the selected middle school Map 5 were distributed to have each school represented on the east and west side of US 75. The attendance zone changes in the selected high school Map 4 will move some students currently attending McKinney North High School to the district’s other two high schools.

Quote of note: “Our top priority remains unchanged—to ensure that every child in McKinney ISD feels safe, supported, and connected,” Superintendent Shawn Pratt said in a news release.

Nearly 5 years after Uri, ERCOT says Texas power grid will be stable this winter

The Texas power grid is expected to hold up this winter, officials with the Electric Reliability Council of Texas said Dec. 9. This is due in part to “tremendous supply growth on the ERCOT grid,” ERCOT CEO Pablo Vegas said, amid an influx of data centers coming to the state.

The overview: Since last winter, over 11,000 megawatts of generating capacity have been added to the ERCOT grid, Vegas said. That growth, which largely comes from battery storage and solar facilities, could be used to power about 2.8 million homes during periods of peak electric demand.

Zooming in: Under most weather conditions, there is a less than 2% chance of a grid emergency through February, ERCOT found.

However, Texas could be in trouble in the unlikely event that a repeat of Winter Storm Uri hits large parts of the state this winter, although ERCOT noted that the probability of such a severe storm happening again was "well under one percent." The February 2021 freeze devastated an unprepared power grid, resulting in nearly 250 deaths.
