New residency rule slashes available housing options for sex offenders in North Fort Worth

The city of Fort Worth increased residency restrictions aimed to reduce opportunities for contact between registered sex offenders and children by restricting where such offenders may reside in relation to areas where children commonly gather.

The motion passed during the Feb. 24 council meeting after being tabled at the Feb. 10 meeting.

Current situation: Council voted 9-0 to pass the registry distance from 1,000 feet to 2,000 feet, with Chris Nettles and Elizabeth Beck absent from the meeting.

“The fact there’s any opposition to this is quite surprising,” District 4 council member Charlie Lauersdorf said. “I’m glad the city of Fort Worth is moving forward on this. I’m glad we changed it to 2,000 feet. I think this is about protecting our kids. ... If it protects even one child [in] the next 30 or 40 years, it is completely worth it.”

The outlook: Any person, firm or corporation that violates, disobeys, omits, neglects or refuses to comply with or who resists the enforcement this ordinance will be fined up to $500 for each offense.

$40M Keller Sports Park renovations to be celebrated with grand reopening in April

Keller Sports Park is scheduled to have its grand reopening at the end of April.

The gist: Residents can join city officials at Keller Sports Park for its ribbon cutting ceremony and tour of the grounds from 9 a.m.-noon on April 25, according to a city social media post.

Some of the $40.8 million renovations to the sports park include 12 renovated baseball and softball fields and expand facilities for lacrosse, equestrian and soccer competitions, according to previous reporting.

The background: The renovations at the park started in 2021 when a task force was formed to discuss transforming the three baseball fields that were constructed in the 1970s. The task force recommended significant renovations and updates in March 2022, per previous reporting. The updates are the first major renovations to the park since 2004, Director of Community Services Cody Maberry said.

The ribbon cutting ceremony was originally scheduled for January but was pushed back to April.
