See how Sugar Land, Missouri City's demographics have changed in 5 years

Sugar Land saw a 7.32% decrease in population between 2019 and 2024, while Missouri City saw a 2.68% increase, according to five-year estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey.

The overview: The 2024 results, which were released Jan. 29, show a drop of 8,693 residents between the 2024 and 2019 five-year estimates in Sugar Land. Meanwhile, Missouri City grew by 2,001 residents.

The details: The data shows both cities became more diverse over the last five years, with the percentage of white residents shrinking by 12.47 percentage points in Sugar Land and 11.21 percentage points in Missouri City from 2019 data.

Digging deeper: Meanwhile, the data showed both cities saw their median age increase with Sugar Land’s increasing by 0.6 years to 42.8 years and the most populous age group—between 45 and 54 years—sitting at 14.5% of the population.


Missouri City’s median age has also increased by 0.9 years to 40.5 years, with the most populous age group sitting in the 25-34 age group, at 13.8%, the data shows.

Discount furniture store coming to Missouri City's Riverstone Shopping Center

Homesense, a discount furniture store, is coming to Missouri City's Riverstone Shopping Center, company officials announced in a Feb. 12 news release.

What they offer: The store will feature all things home, including an array of furniture, an art and mirror gallery, an extensive lighting department, a rug emporium and a general store section with changing seasonal items, per the release.

Zooming in: The furniture store—which is a sister company to HomeGoods, T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and Sierra—first came to Texas in March with a store in Fort Worth, with other locations in Katy and Austin following suit, per the release.

Family-owned Mexican cafe holds grand opening in the Houston Heights

Alturas Mexican Cafe opened Feb. 6 at 2409 Airline Drive, Ste. 100, Houston, serving authentic, flavorful meals that reflect Mexican traditions and heritage. 

Founded by the Navarro family, the cafe is dedicated to preserving recipes passed down through generations, according to the website.

The menu features classic items such as enchiladas and street tacos, as well as more cultural dishes such as Pambazo, Milanesa and Quecas, which are fried corn tortilla quesadillas stuffed with melted cheese and protein.

Bellaire baker turns a life of travel into cakes inspired by the world’s flavors

From Central Asia to Southeastern Europe, baker Goha Dosmuratova finds inspiration for her homemade recipes from around the world.

After closing her bakery in Romania and moving to Texas in 2024, Dosmuratova opened a new shop at 6300 W. Loop S., Ste. 130, Bellaire, serving custom cakes, cupcakes and cookies.

“I'm a sweet tooth person,” Dosmuratova said. “I love desserts, I love cakes, and when you travel around the world ... and you don't like the taste, but you really want the cake, you're just trying to bake it yourself to make it perfect. So that's how I came up with my recipes.”
