MoPac South expansion heads to public review

For over a decade, the Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority has spearheaded an $825 million project along 8.77 miles of MoPac South between Cesar Chavez Street and Slaughter Lane.

How we got here: The agency initiated an environmental study of the corridor to identify options to improve mobility and safety.

Breaking it down: The Recommended Build Alternative 2C configuration features northbound and southbound express lanes from Cesar Chavez to the Barton Skyway via an elevated, wishbone-shaped ramp. The configuration also includes two express lanes from Barton Skyway to Convict Hill Road, one express lane from Convict Hill Road to Slaughter Lane, and other improvements.

Put in perspective: By 2045 the 2C express lanes would save drivers 12 minutes during northbound morning peak hours and 14 minutes during southbound evening peak hours, compared to the no-build alternative. The general-purpose lanes would save drivers four minutes northbound and five minutes southbound.

Get involved: Community members can provide public comment on the draft environmental assessment online, by mail or by voicemail through May 3.

Expansion could bring Desnudo, Rockman, austiNuts and more to Austin airport

As the expansion of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport continues, the city is looking to bring both local and national retailers to new terminal areas.

The details: The multiyear expansion, Journey with AUS, will add taxiways, a concourse, a parking garage and other improvements. Also included is the extension of the existing Barbara Jordan Terminal's west side and a smaller temporary terminal, Concourse M.

This month, city officials are slated to approve a new concession lease agreement that will bring new retail, food and beverage options to the West Gate Expansion area and Concourse M as the airport development program moves along. The deal could see travelers get access to products from local businesses such as Densudo Coffee, Rockman and autiNuts as well as national retailers Starbucks and Amazon.
