Georgetown Visitors Center to close for renovations

The Georgetown Visitors Center will temporarily close for infrastructure improvements starting this month.

What’s happening?: The closure will begin in December and last approximately 12-18 months, Downtown and Tourism Director Kim McAuliffe said at a Dec. 9 City Council workshop.

During the closure, guests can find Visitors Center services at the new Downtown Development and Special Events office in the city-owned parking garage. All operations will continue as normal from the new office, McAuliffe said.

The $2.5 million renovation is funded by the city’s hotel occupancy tax fund, and includes:
  • Interior layout updates
  • An updated retail and merchandise display
  • Additional restrooms
  • Safety improvements
  • Structural repairs

The why: City officials considered relocating the office or building a new facility, but ultimately decided to renovate the existing space. By upgrading the Visitors Center now, the city can avoid more expensive issues, modernize the building, and ensure long-term accessibility and functionality, McAuliffe said.

UT Austin wins $4.8M semiconductor grant for metrology facility

The University of Texas at Austin is receiving a $4.8 million state grant for a new local semiconductor lab, Gov. Greg Abbott announced Dec. 10.

The details: The multimillion-dollar Texas Semiconductor Innovation Fund award will support UT Austin's establishment of the QLab, described as a quantum-enhanced semiconductor facility focused on metrology, or measurement science. The QLab metrology facility is meant to support UT’s academic research and serve the semiconductors and quantum industries in Texas. Abbott noted metrology is “critical” to semiconductor manufacturing given the scale of materials measured through the process.

The UT Austin grant is the latest TSIF award that's contributed to regional initiatives, including Samsung's expansive Taylor fabrication plant and other Central Texas facilities. UT has also moved to establish a Taylor campus near the future Samsung plant and launch a new semiconductor master's program.
