Buda council to consider potential futsal amenities

Buda residents may see expanded opportunities for a soccer variant growing in popularity nationally. The Buda City Council will weigh in on increasing opportunities for futsal with immediate programming options or future development at a March 24 meeting.

Some context: Futsal is a version of soccer played on a surface similar in size to a basketball court. The sport, invented in Uruguay in 1930, can be played indoors and outdoors, according to U.S. Futsal.

The overview: City staff will present the council with two identified locations that could support the sport. Buda has a large number of young families, youth sports participation and a growing population, making it an ideal location for futsal amenities, according to agenda documents.

City staff identified Stoneridge Park and the City Park Pavilion area as potential futsal locations.

Diving deeper: Buda could receive a grant for futsal facilities with a 20% city-funded match. The grant would be facilitated by the Verde Pitch Alliance, an affiliate of Austin FC and 4ATX.

Beyond Pompeii Pizza serves up family-style pies in Leander

Independently run and family-owned, Beyond Pompeii Pizza is a “true mom-and-pop shop.” Owner Bob Khan had one rule when he dreamed of opening a restaurant: make it for families, run by family, everything family. More than a decade after immigrating from India and settling in Leander, he and his family made it happen.

The family put their Indian heritage on the menu. The Palak Paneer pizza features spinach, Indian cottage cheese, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, green chilies and a spice blend. Sides include chicken wings, cheesy bread and lava rocks, which are garlic butter and Parmesan bread bites, and the menu showcases a selection of Blue Bell ice cream for dessert.

'Future of aviation': Air taxi testing coming to Austin under federal pilot program

Test flights for electric aviation services like air taxis will soon be taking off across the state, including in Austin, following the Texas Department of Transportation's selection for a Federal Aviation Administration pilot program this month.

The details: The federal initiative stems from a 2025 executive order from President Donald Trump to advance aviation systems, including unmanned drones and electric vertical takeoff and landing, or eVTOL, aircraft.

The FAA selected eight eVTOL pilot projects across the country under that order, including TxDOT's, which are now expected to kick off this summer.

TxDOT is partnering with four aviation companies to launch eVTOL air taxi flights and other services between Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, Houston and smaller communities. The phased project is expected to start this year.

One more thing: While Austin developed its own proposal spearheaded by locally based LIFT Aircraft, that outline wasn't selected by the federal agency.
