GALLERY: Grapevine-Colleyville ISD students return for 2026-27 school year

Students returned to Grapevine-Colleyville ISD for the first day of classes Aug. 12.

The details: Parents, teachers and staff headed to campuses this morning, including Cross Timbers Middle School, O.C. Taylor Elementary School, Grapevine High School and Colleyville Heritage High School.

GCISD operates nine elementary campuses, four middle schools, two high schools, a collegiate academy and iUniversityPrep, which provides a virtual education option. Several district facilities were worked on over the summer, including several elementary schools and Grapevine High School.

Ascension Coffee plans October opening in Southlake

Ascension Coffee could open its Southlake location this fall, according to a spokesperson for Southlake Town Square.

The overview: The Southlake location will include a full espresso bar, a slow bar, an area in which baristas manually prepare drinks, and seasonal coffee flights.
What they offer: Ascension’s drink menu includes lattes, cold brew, frappucinos and teas, according to its website. Customers can also order a variety of dishes, such as avocado toast, overnight oats and sandwiches.

Kirkwood Reserve developer garners approval for site plan

Southlake officials approved a site plan for a mixed-use development anchored by Dakota's Steakhouse.

Council approved the plan, which includes elevations for three retail buildings in the development, updated elevations for the event center and revisions to the parking areas, during the Aug. 4 meeting.

The overview: Kirkwood Reserve will have three retail buildings with eight individual suites totaling 10,795 square feet of space, according to city documents. The development also includes a proposed 10,000-square-foot event center with a seating capacity of 200.

Both the event center and retail space are planned as future phases for development, which also includes a Dakota’s Steakhouse.

Tim McEneny, the restaurateur behind Dakota’s Steakhouse and the site’s developer, said crews have poured the final section of an 820-foot retaining wall for the property, and should pour the foundation for the restaurant soon.

What’s next: The Dakota’s Steakhouse is expected to open in 2027, McEneny said.

“Every update you bring looks better and better,” Mayor Shawn McCaskill said. “We’re excited about it.”

Tarrant County College to consider tax rate increase for upcoming fiscal year

Tarrant County College will consider a tax rate increase for the 2026-27 fiscal year, according to TCC documents.

What’s happening? TCC’s board of directors held a special meeting Aug. 6 to discuss the possible tax rate increase.

The college proposed raising the rate from $0.11228 to $0.12 per $100 valuation, according to a presentation given to the board by Chief Financial Officer Pamela Anglin.

Board president Jeannie Deakyne said based on her calculations, schools in Tarrant County specifically are being affected by the Tarrant Appraisal District’s decision to reappraise property values every two years instead of every year.

According to the college’s FY 2025-26 budget breakdown, the three main revenue sources for TCC are property tax revenue, state appropriations and tuition and fees.

What’s next? The proposed tax rate will be voted on by the board at the Aug. 20 board meeting, Anglin said. A vote for the tax-rate approval will be Sept. 24, and the rate has to be approved by Sept. 30 or the tax rate will remain the same, Anglin said.
