Roya now serving up Persian cuisine to North Austin

A new Persian restaurant from Amir Hajimaleki—chef and owner of District Kitchen and Cocktails, Oasthouse Kitchen and Bar, Keepers Coastal Kitchen, and Daisy Lounge—is now offering dishes that Hajimaleki has been serving at exclusive pop-up dinners across Austin since 2018.

On the menu: Roya honors Hajimaleki’s family heritage, according to a news release, serving dishes including:

  • Wild mushroom borani, with garlic labneh, fire-roasted mushrooms, black garlic chili oil, pine nuts and taftoon
  • Mahiche gheymeh, with saffron tomato braised lamb shank, split peas, dried lime and shoestring sibzamini
  • Wagyu chenjeh kabob, with Australian wagyu, Roya fenugreek seasoning and tarragon chimichurri

Dennis Van, the current pastry chef of all of Hajimaleki’s concepts and a previous winner of Netflix’s "Sugar Rush," will oversee desserts at Roya. Van will also be a culinary partner in the business.

Quote of note: “Roya is deeply personal for me, it’s a way to honor my family, my roots, and the traditions I grew up with," Hajimaleki said in a news release.

Westlake-based wellness company Humann promotes cardiovascular health

Humann cofounder and CEO Joel Kocher said the Austin-born and based wellness company believes cardiovascular health is "not a niche or trendy fad," and has developed a range of cardiovascular health products since 2010.

The background: Humann was founded from a University of Texas Health Science Center research program, Kocher said. The program emerged from the work of Dr. Ferid Murad, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1998 for discoveries around nitric oxide and and cardiovascular function which Humann utilizes in its products.

What they offer: Based in Westlake, Humann offers a range of products targeting cardiovascular health, blood pressure, cholesterol, metabolism, joint health and cognitive health. Products include:

  • Beet-based nitric oxide supplements to support blood flow and cardiovascular health
  • Powder drink mixes to support energy, endurance and recovery
  • Capsule supplements to support heart health and blood pressure
  • Chewable supplements to improve circulation and cardiovascular support

According to Kocher, the products are developed with clinical research, including peer-reviewed and university-led studies, and guided by a science advisory board and an in-house scientist.

On The Transportation Beat
Long-term closure to begin on I-35 frontage road near Riverside Drive

Starting Feb. 16, the northbound I-35 frontage road at Riverside Drive will be closed through 2029 to accommodate construction of a pedestrian bridge across Lady Bird Lake. The project is part of the I-35 Capital Express Central Project's Lady Bird Lake segment.

The update: According to Texas Department of Transportation officials, a Riverside Drive bypass lane is now open and a temporary south-to-north U-turn at Woodland Avenue will be opened in order to accommodate the closure. Northbound frontage road traffic across Lady Bird Lake bridge will be reduced to one lane, and the existing pedestrian path and north sidewalk on Riverside Drive will be closed. This traffic pattern is expected to remain in place through 2029.

Some context: The I-35 Capital Express Central Project is a $4.5 billion project slated to bring two nontolled high-occupancy vehicle lanes between Hwy. 290 and Hwy. 71, remove upper decks along I-35, sink sections of the roadway by about 25 feet and widen the corridor with more lanes.
