Georgetown expands city pickleball courts to meet demand

Eight years ago, Georgetown had just four pickleball courts at the Georgetown Tennis Center. The city now has 16 courts at the Tennis Center, as well as 12 courts at other facilities, in response to increased interest in the sport, city officials said.

“I've never seen a sport explode like pickleball has,” Georgetown Recreation Program Coordinator Pete Polkinghorn said. “It's just an absolute phenomenon.”

The impact: Polkinghorn attributes the increased popularity of pickleball to its physical and social benefits, as well as its accessibility.

“One of the things that I see in pickleball is it has gotten so many people off of the couch and so many people that have just never exercised out moving around and playing,” Polkinghorn said.

The options: Georgetown has three facilities that offer pickleball: Georgetown Tennis Center, McMaster Athletic Complex and Georgetown Recreation Center.

Georgetown ISD proposes new bell schedule in 2026-27 to improve bus route efficiency

Georgetown ISD is considering adjusting its bell schedule next school year to improve the efficiency of its bus routes.

District officials shared new start and dismissal times for elementary, middle and high school campuses at a Jan. 12 board workshop. The proposed schedule would shorten the school day by five minutes while adding two instructional days to the school calendar, Chief of Strategic Operations Lannon Heflin said.

The details: The updated bell schedule would reduce the current instructional day from 440 minutes to 435 minutes. To accommodate for the shortened school day, GISD would change two staff development days into regular instructional days for students, Heflin said.

The context: The new schedule would allow GISD to reduce its total number of bus routes, which would help the district save money and combat a shortage of bus drivers, Heflin said.

What's next: The GISD board of trustees is expected to vote on adopting the new bell schedule at its Jan. 26 meeting, said Melinda Brasher, GISD executive director for communications and community engagement.
