Richardson extends facility closures through Monday, suspends waste collection

Richardson city facilities will remain closed through Jan. 26 and solid waste collection will be suspended due to ongoing severe weather, according to the city’s website.

What you need to know: 
Richardson announced Friday that city facilities would be closed over the weekend, and these closures will now extend through Monday due to hazardous travel conditions. Solid waste collection, including trash, recycling, brush and bulky item collection and commercial solid waste collection, are suspended Monday as well. Richardson’s three 24-hour emergency warming centers remain open for temporary shelter.

What else: 
Due to the city’s facility closures, Monday’s Richardson City Council meeting is canceled and the municipal court’s docket will be rescheduled to Feb. 2. Temperature highs are estimated to remain in the 20s through Tuesday morning, according to the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth/Dallas office, with significant road improvement not expected until Tuesday afternoon.

Dallas-Fort Worth under Extreme Cold Warning until Tuesday morning

The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex is under an Extreme Cold Warning from Sunday night until 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

What's happening: Temperature highs are estimated to remain in the 20s with the lows in the teens and single digits through Tuesday morning, according to the NWS's Fort Worth/Dallas office. Wind chills will range from -10 to 0 degrees Monday morning in DFW.

Wind chill values will make "Feels Like" temps as cold as -10 degrees with low temperatures ranging from -1 to 14 degrees across North Texas, per the NWS. The extreme temperatures create hazards for hypothermia and frozen pipes.

Plano ISD announces school closures for Monday, Tuesday

Plano ISD will be closed on Monday, Jan. 26 and Tuesday, Jan. 27, according to the district’s website.

What you need to know: All district campuses and facilities will be closed due to “extreme cold temperatures and anticipated hazardous conditions of roads, parking lots and walkways,” a PISD update states. All campus and district activities are also canceled through Jan. 27.

District officials expect classes to be held as scheduled on Wednesday, according to the update. PISD parents will be notified through email, text messages and phone calls on any future weather-related updates. Updates can also be found on the district's website or social media pages.
