After years of struggle, a viral video brings new life to a Houston restaurateur’s dream

Alex Moghaddam’s business was struggling. He had invested in high-quality ingredients and authentic food items, but after working 112 hours, seven days a week for three and a half years, Moghaddam said he still wasn’t generating enough business to support his two restaurants, La Vita Coffee and Burger Vibe.

Out of desperation, he turned to social media and asked local influencers to come try his products.

The specifics: When coming up with the menu for La Vita Coffee and Burger Vibe, Moghaddam paid attention to every detail. He said he wanted his burgers to taste better than his competitors', so he crafted his own recipe from a friend’s grandmother in New York and only uses organic, halal burger patties.

One more thing: Moghaddam and his wife wanted to create a family-friendly environment, as it was something they thought the area lacked.

Picos Restaurant owners to move locations after outpouring of community support

Officials with the authentic Mexican Cuisine restaurant known as Arnaldo Richards' Picos Restaurant, or Picos, announced plans Jan. 8 to relocate after recent support from the public gave the franchise renewed hope in its future success.

Taking a step back: The Houston staple originally announced in August 2025 that the restaurant was preparing for an immediate closure after more than 40 years in service. A month later, officials said that the restaurant would remain open until the end of 2025 after seeing a wave of support following the first closure announcement.

Latest update: Now, at the start of the new year, Richards said that he has big plans to move later this year rather than shut down the restaurant entirely.

“Our community has given us an opportunity we never thought possible,” Richards said. “Thanks to them, we have gone from closing the book to writing a new chapter."

While the site of the new restaurant is still to be determined, the move is expected to happen in the next 6-8 months.

‘Parkland is not replaceable’: Hermann Park Conservancy weighs in on Ben Taub Hospital expansion

Less than a month away from when Harris County Commissioners Court will hold a formal public hearing on the Ben Taub Hospital expansion in the Texas Medical Center, members of the Hermann Park Conservancy hosted the first town hall Jan. 7, alongside Harris Health officials, to inform the community about the group’s stance on the proposed land condemnation.

Quote of note: "Parkland is not replaceable," Lambright said. “It is an endangered species, and once taken, it is generally gone forever."
