Cannon Beach surf resort developer breaks ground in McKinney

Work is starting on a new mixed-use project in McKinney that is guaranteed to make waves.

The gist: City and development officials broke ground Dec. 15 on a 35-acre surf resort located at the corner of Stacy Road and SH 121. The development, called Cannon Beach, is expected to bring a hotel, a surf lagoon and an assortment of businesses.

Its first phase is projected to open in mid-2027, according to a news release.

What you need to know: The $200 million surf resort, announced in 2024, is being developed by the Cannon Development Group. The finished product will include a 3-acre surf lagoon, lazy river, and a mineral hot springs circuit, according to the news release.

The development will also include a full-service resort hotel with cabanas and lounge areas that directly connect with the surf lagoon. 

Quote of note: Developer Cole Cannon said officials were “fully committed” to building an environment where families can spend quality time together. Cannon said developers were building a “reservoir where memories are being deposited every day.”

What they will offer: The store will sell a variety of items including beer, cigarettes, vapes, coffee, snacks and farm-fresh eggs, Kolluri said.

Council to consider occupancy increase for warming center at McKinney church

First McKinney Baptist Church, located at 1615 W. Louisiana St., is seeking to increase the maximum occupancy limit for its warming station.

What’s happening: McKinney City Council members are scheduled to consider the request at an upcoming Dec. 16 meeting held at McKinney City Hall. First McKinney Baptist Church is also seeking to modify the temperature threshold for operation of the warming station, according to a city document.

The church already has a temporary use permit for operation of a warming station that allows up to 40 guests at one time when temperatures are forecast to drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Officials are seeking an amendment to allow operation when the ambient temperature is at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit and to increase the maximum occupancy to 100 guests.

Get involved: McKinney City Council is scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. for a work session and at 6 p.m. for the regular meeting Dec. 16. Both meetings will take place within the City Council chambers at McKinney City Hall, located at 401 E. Virginia St.
