Richardson officials propose $4.86 million in drainage projects

Richardson officials proposed $4.86 million in drainage projects for the next fiscal year, which will include flood prevention and erosion control across the city. Assistant Director of Engineering Katie Barron presented the city’s proposed projects for fiscal year 2026-27 to City Council on June 1.

The overview: Barron proposed $4.86 million in drainage funding for the FY 2026-27 budget, a slight increase from this year’s projected $4.73 million.

Breaking it down: Richardson identifies watershed and erosion projects through regular watershed studies, which identify flooding concerns and mitigation strategies, as well as creek bank erosion assessment that identify the impacts of erosion. The city has completed seven watershed studies that have identified 157 total projects, Barron said.

Barron said staff prioritized the projects based on need and budget, focusing on work that would reduce flooding in residential areas.

Dallas Mavericks plan new arena, entertainment district in far north Dallas

The Dallas Mavericks plan to build a new arena and entertainment district in far north Dallas, near the Richardson border, the organization announced June 1.

What you need to know: The Mavericks entered into “option agreements” to purchase approximately 104 acres of the former Valley View Mall site, located off of I-35 and Preston Road, according to a statement from the team.

The Mavericks plan to develop a “vibrant mixed-use destination” around the area, with restaurants, entertainment, green spaces and family-friendly experiences. The team will likely move out of its downtown Dallas location by 2031, when its lease ends at the American Airlines Center.

Quote of note: “The Valley View site meets most of the criteria established at the outset of our evaluation process,” the team said in the statement. “It is our goal to stay in the City of Dallas, and we believe this site provides the strongest opportunity to achieve that goal.”
