Boerne leaders reflect on a year of growth, future projects

Boerne leaders on Oct. 23 highlighted the state of the city during a Greater Boerne Chamber of Commerce event.  City Manager Ben Thatcher, Mayor Frank Ritchie and Mayor Pro Tem Ty Wolosin shared city updates over the last year, and looking ahead to future projects.

The overview: Of the projects highlighted, mobility, parks and recreation and other capital improvements took the center stage.

Wolosin shared an update on future mobility projects, including improvements to the Herff Road and River Road intersection, which is among the most needed projects in the community, he said.  Since that intersection is located on a Texas Department of Transportation road, state approval is needed before improvements can be made.

“It is a very complicated intersection and a very expensive project,” Wolosin said. “It is also a state intersection, and not an intersection that the city or county can just go and fix.”

Other road project highlights included improvements to roads covered by 2022 bond funding. These projects include the reconstruction of Adler Road and the roundabout coming to School Street.

Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation harbors animals from Central Texas and beyond

For a group that rescues over 10,000 animals each year, this San Antonio-based organization had to start somewhere.

How we got here: Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation, or WRR, started from “literally nothing” back in 1977, Founder and President Lynn Cuny said.

“The whole concept of rehabilitation and rescue wasn’t really in existence in Texas, back then,” Cuny said. “Nothing like what we do now.”

The breakdown: WRR’s sanctuary in Kendall County is home to hundreds of displaced animals rescued from not just the San Antonio area, but across the entire country.

The sanctuary’s Executive Director, Ashton Kuhn, said the primary goal of operations is to limit exposure to human contact and give them the best possible chance to thrive and survive.

The big picture: Overall, Cuny said that while the efforts of WRR are relatively small compared to the dangers that native animals face as a whole, doing something is better than doing nothing at all.

Voters asked to approve ‘significant’ tax cut for Texas small businesses

Texas is home to about 3.5 million small businesses, according to the National Federation of Independent Businesses. Estimates show that the average Texas small-business owner could save about $2,500 per year if voters approve an expanded business tax exemption on the Nov. 4 ballot.

The details: State Proposition 9 would exempt up to $125,000 of a business’s personal property, such as equipment, furniture and vehicles, from taxation. Texas business owners currently receive a tax exemption on property worth $2,500 or less.

“At $2,500, virtually everyone's paying this tax,” NFIB Texas Director Jeff Burdett said in an Oct. 24 interview. “If you have a desk, a computer and a chair, you're probably over $2,500 [in inventory]. … It makes no difference for almost any business.”

At the polls: Early voting in the Nov. 4 election began Oct. 20 and runs through Oct. 31. For more information about the propositions and candidates on your local ballot, visit www.communityimpact.com/voter-guide.
