ICYMI: 4 updates from Celina City Council’s June meeting

At a recent Celina City Council meeting, city officials took action on a Chevrolet dealership and median landscaping standards.

Officials also discussed upcoming projects, including an expansion of Celina’s downtown square and a potential reorganization of the fire department’s staffing model.

Here’s what to know about council’s June 9 meeting.

1. Celina council approves 25-acre Chevrolet dealership near DNT

Council approved a request to amend a 2017 planned development to allow a Mac Haik Chevrolet car dealership on 25 acres near future Dallas North Tollway.

A representative from Chevrolet said the Celina location will be one of Chevrolet’s flagship dealerships and serve as a model for other locations in the future.

1418 Coffee looks to open in July at Celina Station

1418 Coffee plans to open its location at Celina Station later this month, owner David Bryant said in an email.

On the menu: The locally-owned coffee chain offers handcrafted drinks, housemade cold brew and pastries made at their off-site bakery in Prosper.

In case you missed it: Ramble Coffee House, a cafe operated by 1418 Coffee, opened in Celina’s Ramble master-planned community in June.

Lava Hot Chicken now offers tenders, wings and sliders in Plano

The restaurant had its soft opening in Plano in June and has a wide variety of fried chicken options on its menu, including tenders, sliders, “lava chunk” chicken, chicken on loaded fries and chicken tacos.

The restaurant focuses on bold, flavor-first Halal chicken and has a “spice ladder” with five levels, according to its website.

Capo’s serves Italian with a twist on Prosper, Celina border

Capo’s Pizza and Pasta is open on Frontier Parkway, a company representative confirmed.

In addition to traditional pizza toppings like pepperoni and olives, Capo’s also offers options like paneer, tandoori chicken and gyro meat.

For appetizers, customers can order mozzarella sticks or opt for dishes like za’atar rolls, chicken musakhan rolls and akawi pie, a Middle Eastern cheese bread.

Officials ask Texas lawmakers for more resources to respond to mental health crisis calls

In Texas, 246 of the state’s 254 counties are designated by the federal government as “mental health professional shortage areas,” meaning local law enforcement are often tasked with responding to mental health crisis calls.

The situation: All Texas peace officers are required to complete crisis intervention and deescalation trainings, according to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement.

What's happening: Across Community Impact’s coverage areas, some city and county law enforcement agencies are partnering with local mental health professionals to respond to crisis calls. However, law enforcement and criminal justice leaders from smaller communities told state legislators July 7 that they have “limited tools” to effectively respond to mental health calls and help people in crisis.

“We do not have any inpatient mental health facilities in my county—we've never had that, and we've needed them for decades,” Comal County Criminal District Attorney Jennifer Tharp said July 7. “We originally started out sending individuals to the San Antonio area, and right now we are transporting individuals for inpatient treatment to North Austin.”
