Fort Bend ISD to apply for grant to create officer wellness and readiness program

Fort Bend ISD could implement an officer wellness program to improve officer health and operational readiness, lower avoidable strain on staffing and promote a data-driven wellness culture.

The overview: At its May 11 meeting, Fort Bend ISD’s board of trustees approved the application submission for a Criminal Justice Grant Program to create an officer wellness and readiness program.

The department does not currently have a cohesive approach to monitor wellness, fatigue or injury-risk trends, according to agenda documents. Instead, existing procedures depend on officer self-management.

Zooming in: If approved, the district would implement Vigilife, an officer wellness and fitness readiness platform, for all sworn personnel to establish equitable access and consistent readiness standards to meet certain needs, including:

  • Strengthening physical readiness
  • Reducing preventable injuries
  • Supporting long-term workforce sustainability
  • Providing individualized wellness insights and early warning indicators

Next steps: FBISD officials said the application is still in the process of attaining full state approval. Final details, including funding amounts or the time frame for approval, have not been finalized as of press time.
