College Station considers removing parking on 4 roads for resident safety

To clear tight roadways for emergency vehicles and trash collection, the city of College Station is evaluating removing parking from four neighborhood streets.

The gist: City traffic engineer Nick Barrio told Community Impact the targeted roads are all very narrow and don’t accommodate street parking well. The areas included are:

  • Park Place area

  • Angus and Kerry streets

  • Dexter and George Bush drives

Referring to the roads, which range from 20 to 24 feet wide, Barrio said the priority is to create a better driving environment for residents and create more access for emergency vehicles if needed.

“We want to make things safer,” Barrio said. “We don’t want people to cross the street to get to a park and we don’t want solid waste around parking. Emergency access is also one of our biggest concerns.”

Stay tuned: The city held an open meeting in City Hall to discuss potential no-parking zones with residents. The announcement of a finished proposal for the no-parking area has not yet been made, but Barrio said it will be soon.

Brazos County promotes volunteer firefighting to meet growing demand

Brazos County Emergency Service Districts are promoting volunteer firefighting to address a growing population.

In a nutshell: The county has grown by 19,670 people since 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, placing it among the top 100 growing metro areas in the country. To raise awareness, the districts hosted an Inside the Firehouse event to showcase their equipment and duties.

The highlights:

  • Brazos County ESDs operate in four boundary areas and employ full-time, part-time, on-call, volunteer and contract workers.

  • They are funded by local property taxes, which are capped by state law.

  • The ESDs face high equipment costs, with suits costing more than $10,000 each and trucks costing close to $1 million.

  • They are governed by a five-member board and follow a 10-year capital plan.

All four precinct fire chiefs are seeking new volunteer firefighters. Applicants can apply online and must pass physicals, drug tests and background tests.

South Brazos County ESD 1 moves to new fire station

South Brazos County Emergency Services District No. 1 and the South Brazos County Fire Department have moved into a new station, about a 10-minute drive from the former location.

How we got here: The move from 11770 Walnut Road comes as the department invests in firefighter safety, according to the ESD’s social media posts. In August, the department announced it had begun purchasing a second set of protective gear for each firefighter, allowing one set to be cleaned and decontaminated after a fire while the other remains available.

Before you go: Work on the new station began in November 2025, and officials expect to hold a grand opening Nov. 2.

  • Move announced Oct. 9

  • New address: 6055 Koppe Bridge Road, College Station
