McKinney ISD greenlights $1.1M for campus, track improvements

More improvements are coming to three McKinney ISD campuses.

The McKinney ISD board of trustees approved spending nearly $150,000 for the third phase of campus refreshes at an April 20 meeting. The district also approved $950,450 to replace the track at McKinney High School.

The details: The district is spending $149,686 in bond funds on campus improvements for Bennett Elementary School and Evans Middle School, district documents state. Upgrades include landscaping and fencing at Bennett Elementary School and landscaping at Evans Middle School, per district documents.

This comes after the district approved spending approximately $11.3 million on refreshes to these two campuses and McKinney Boyd High School at a March meeting and a January meeting. These updates, as well as the work approved at earlier meetings this year, will begin on the last day of school, which is May 21, per district documents.

Eyes on Painted Tree offers optometry services in McKinney

Eyes on Painted Tree is now open in McKinney, a staff member confirmed.

The gist: The optometrist office offers a variety of eye care services including comprehensive eye exams, pediatric eye exams, myopia management, and urgent eye care for emergencies, according to its website. The office, founded by Dr. Anseh Babaei, also offers a curated selection of eyewear frames from designer brands.

Q&A: Meet Frisco ISD's new Superintendent Todd Fouche

Frisco ISD named Todd Fouche as the district’s newest superintendent.

What you need to know: Fouche stepped into the role in April after his contract was approved by the board of trustees. Fouched replaced Superintendent Mike Waldrip, who served in the position since 2017. Fouche has served in several roles during his 10 years in the district, most recently as the deputy superintendent.

Parents eulogize Camp Mystic victims; lawmakers urge health officials to suspend camp's license

Over 130 Central Texas residents and visitors died over the July 4 weekend as an intense rainstorm and flooding swept through the region. Among them were 28 deaths at Camp Mystic: 25 young campers; aged 8 to 10 years old; two 18-year-old counselors; and 70-year-old Richard "Dick" Eastland, the camp's executive director.

The private Christian girls camp has been under scrutiny for the actions camp leaders took to attempt to save campers in cabins along the Guadalupe River.

What's happening: During the second day of public hearings April 28, a panel of lawmakers investigating the July 4 flood heard roughly 12 hours of testimony from: 

  • The Eastland family, which owns and operates Camp Mystic
  • The head of the Texas Division of Emergency Management
  • The families of some campers who survived the flood
  • The parents of seven girls who died at Camp Mystic on July 4
  • Officials from the Texas Department of State Health Services, which licenses youth camps
