PGA Tour drives tourism with Austin tournament

The PGA Tour is returning to Austin with the inaugural Austin Championship at Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa on Nov. 9-12.

The tournament will showcase 120 players, marking PGA Tour’s first event in Austin since the 2023 World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play. The Austin Championship has the potential to return annually, depending on if PGA Tour secures a lead sponsor for the event, according to Ian Helm, tournament director at HNS Sports Group.

The big picture: The PGA Tour is taking over Omni Barton Creek Resort & Spa this fall with a reimagined tournament, hosting the Austin Championship as part of the FedExCup Fall series.

The FedExCup Fall series includes eight events that shape each golfer’s eligibility for the 2027 PGA Tour season. The tournament will see 120 players compete for a $6 million prize and 500 FedExCup points.

The overview: The preliminary contested case hearing for the wastewater permit began on Oct. 27 before the State Office of Administrative Hearings.

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality initially granted contested case hearings to Save Our Springs Alliance, The Nature Conservancy and some nearby homeowners on July 15 in response to the opposition.

Yet others in opposition, including Travis County, were also named as affected parties at the preliminary hearing by the administrative law judge.

What’s next: The hearing process will now enter mediation, a confidential alternative to a traditional hearing in which a neutral third party will help all parties in resolving the dispute.

UPDATE: Texas halts online environmental permit filing amid data center review

The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, which regulates the state's air quality, water quality and waste management, has shut down its electronic filing portal for certain environmental permit applications, an agency spokesperson confirmed Oct. 22. The shutdown comes after watchdog groups said the agency violated an order from Gov. Greg Abbott by processing nearly three dozen permit applications for data center projects.

What's happening: The agency disabled its automated electronic filing system and suspended initial stormwater and wastewater permits, known as "notices of intent," for 17 data center construction projects.

"To ensure all applications are thoroughly reviewed by agency staff to determine if they are related to data centers, applications must be physically provided to TCEQ," agency spokesperson Victoria Cann said in an Oct. 22 statement.

Zooming in: The permits suspended as part of TCEQ's review include a permit for EdgeConneX’s second data center campus in Bastrop County and one for a Google data center facility in Tarrant County, both of which are in Community Impact's coverage areas.
