Austin-San Antonio region to serve as hub for Climate Resilient Communities Accelerator

The Austin-San Antonio area was selected to serve as the next hub for an accelerator poised to strengthen economic stability in the region amid climate threats in September.

What you need to know: The Austin-San Antonio region is the site of the next hub for the Climate Resilient Communities Accelerator, a national initiative focused on engaging local governments, businesses, nonprofits, academics and communities to identify potential solutions to climate challenges.

The details: The accelerator will provide a "structured environment", per a September news release from the City of Austin and Travis County Emergency Services District No. 2., also known as the Pflugerville Fire Department, where participating organizations can share data as well as align existing resources and efforts already in play to come up with innovative solutions.

“The Climate Resilient Communities Accelerator is the kind of bold, collaborative effort we need to prepare for tomorrow while protecting today," Nick Perkins, fire chief of Travis County ESD No. 2, said in the release.

Williamson County Coverage
Williamson County burn ban in effect until December

Williamson County will be under a burn ban for up to 90 days due to drought conditions, following commissioner approval Sept. 30.

The details: While the burn ban is in effect, residents may not burn combustible materials, including leaves, grass, brush and trees, outside of an enclosure that contains all flames and sparks. Violations are punishable with a fine of up to $500.

The order will be in effect for 90 days unless lifted earlier by the commissioners or County Judge Steve Snell if drought conditions improve.

The cause: Drought conditions, especially on the east side of the county, have contributed to high and very high fire danger risk this week, Williamson County Fire Marshal Mike Lugo said at the meeting.

“We’re trying to stay ahead of the fire risk [and] fire danger,” Lugo said.

A new food truck park featuring pickleball courts, an off-leash dog park and a coffee trailer opened in East Austin in early September.

The bring-your-own-beverage hang out spot, known as Webberville District, is the latest concept by Union Venture Group.

The district is home to Mexican food truck Guac and Go and A Hole Coffee trailer. The coffee business takes orders at a walk-up trailer or receives orders virtually and delivers drinks through a hole in a cement wall.
