Manvel city manager receives 5% performance-based bonus

Manvel city manager and engineer Dan Johnson will receive a 5% performance-based bonus after City Council approved the incentive at its Oct. 20 meeting.

The overview: While the amount of the incentive was not disclosed, Mayor Dan Davis said the incentive roots from the work Johnson has put in for the city of Manvel.

Quote of note: “We appreciate the work that [Johnson] put in,” Davis said at the meeting. “Living out the core values of the city goes a long way, and we’ve all set the bar very high. We can see that the department heads and all of our employees are pursuing perfection, and we know that we’ll never achieve perfection, but in the pursuit of it we can achieve excellence.”

Alvin ISD reviews schematic design for Alvin High School renovation, expansion

A new career and technical education, or CTE, building is among some of the additions included in Alvin High School’s renovation and expansion project.

Officials with Houston-based PBK Architects reviewed its schematic design for the high school’s renovation and expansion project at Alvin ISD’s board of trustees’ Oct. 21 meeting.

The background: The renovation and expansion of the school is a part of the district’s $380.1 million bond that addresses AISD’s enrollment growth. The bond passed in November 2024, Community Impact previously reported.

The project: According to a presentation by PBK Architects, the following will be built for the renovation and expansion:
  • New CTE building, which will replace the Luke Kennedy Vocational Building and includes a wing that will connect to the cafeteria
  • Dining expansion, which will allow an indirect capacity of 108 students for larger lunch areas in conditioned spaces
  • Large group instruction spaces for day-to-day student activities

NRG Energy to invest $360M in new Harris County power facility

NRG Energy Inc. will invest $360 million to expand power generation in Harris County through a new 456-megawatt natural gas facility at the existing TH Wharton Generating Station, Gov. Greg Abbott announced Oct. 21.

Explained: The project, which has been designated as a qualified initiative under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology and Innovation (JETI) program, is expected to begin operations by summer 2026. Once complete, the facility will serve the Electric Reliability Council of Texas’ Houston Load Zone—including Houston, Pasadena and The Woodlands—helping meet growing energy demands across the fifth-largest metro area in the U.S., according to the release.

Offering input: NRG leaders said the project will bring both temporary construction jobs and permanent positions once operational.

“Texas energy powers our state’s booming economy,” Abbott said in the news release. “This $360 million investment by NRG in Harris County is a significant advancement in Texas' energy infrastructure. The new natural gas facility will expand power generation and provide reliable, affordable energy for homes and businesses.”
