Fair Oaks Ranch City Council approves Old Fredericksburg Road improvements

Old Fredericksburg Road is planned for reconstruction, with the project cost shared between the city of Fair Oaks Ranch and Bexar County.

The repair would include a mill and overlay alongside improvements to address significant potholes and deterioration. Fair Oaks Ranch City Council on Dec. 4 approved funding for the project.

What’s happening? Through an interlocal agreement, or ILA, Bexar County became responsible for two-thirds of the construction cost, while the city was left accountable for the remaining third.

The total project cost is around $617,647, including a 5% contingency. The city’s share of the project is $205,882.

Upon completion, Fair Oaks Ranch will assume long-term maintenance of the roadway segment. Before the city can assume maintenance, the city of San Antonio would need to take formal action to release the road to Fair Oaks Ranch. Bexar County commissioners are expected to consider the ILA on Feb. 17, and construction is scheduled to begin in March or April.

MURFIT Fitness Club helps Boerne residents achieve health, wellness goals

Blake Murdoch said he’s traveled to countless gyms across the country, most of them offering at least one thing unique and useful—but none of them had everything he wanted.

That’s why Murdoch decided to open MURFIT Fitness Club in Boerne, a growing local gym focused on nurturing all athletes of all skill levels.

What’s special about it? After first opening in May 2024, both Blake and Sage Murdoch created a set of values for the gym to run by.

“We have four pillars that we focus on—mental, spiritual, emotional and physical,” Murdoch said. “These are crucial aspects that can help anyone reach their fitness goals.”

Dig deeper: After a few recent renovation projects that doubled the size of the gym, the now 11,000-square-foot fitness center contains an open space layout filled with state-of-the-art lifting equipment, machines, free weights, and more, according to Murdoch.

“We saw a lot of good pieces from other gyms and brought them all together here at MURFIT,” Murdoch said.

What to know before applying for Texas’ education savings accounts next year

The Texas comptroller’s office has released a set of rules to govern the state’s $1 billion education savings account program, or ESAs. Accepted families will receive thousands of dollars in state funds to send their children to a private school or homeschool them.

The overview: Accredited private schools and education vendors can begin applying to join the program as soon as Dec. 9, and applications will open for interested families Feb. 4.

Most families accepted into the program will receive about $10,300 per student, which can be spent on tuition at accredited private prekindergarten or K-12 schools and related expenses. Homeschooled students will receive up to $2,000 per year, while students with disabilities will be eligible for up to $30,000 annually.

Zooming in: Depending on a family’s income, students with disabilities may receive priority acceptance into the ESA program. Families can submit documentation from a physician or the U.S. Social Security Administration to be prioritized, although a detailed evaluation and individualized education plan are required to receive the additional special education funding.
