2,000-plus delayed voter records trigger overtime in Bastrop County

The Bastrop County Elections Office is seeking reimbursement for overtime pay after processing more than 2,200 delayed voter registration records received from the state in late September.

What happened: Elections Administrator Kristin Miles told Community Impact the backlog was due to a technical error at the state level and affected many counties.

"Texas county voter registrars across the state have received a flood of new voter registrations and updates to voter registration records submitted through the Texas Department of Public Safety," she said in an announcement. "Some of these submissions date as far back as October 2025, but were not sent to Texas county voter registrars until this week."

Miles said staff worked around the clock and had all records processed by midnight Sept. 30.

Zooming in: The backlog resulted in an extra $1,200 worth of overtime pay.

Miles said she will request authorization from Bastrop County Commissioners at the Oct. 13 meeting to apply for reimbursement from the Secretary of State to offset the additional payroll cost.

As lawmakers consider expanding TEFA funding, some public schools say they're losing money

Ahead of Texas' 2027 legislative session, the state comptroller's office has asked lawmakers to double funding for its $1 billion education savings account program.

The overview: The program gives participating families taxpayer dollars for private education and homeschooling, and officials said at least $2 billion are needed to maintain current participation in the program.

Meanwhile, some Texas families are raising concerns about their local school districts losing money as students leave public schools to participate in the program, known as Texas Education Freedom Accounts.

What they're saying: "149 students have accepted vouchers that were otherwise enrolled in Pflugerville ISD, [resulting in] an estimated loss of $1.2 million in attendance funding," said Stacy Harrell, a PfISD parent. "That lost funding will add to budget cuts that are already affecting Pflugerville ISD families. Four elementary schools [are closing], with the possibility of more."
