Mosaics of Mercy fills mental health care gap with resource hub

While struggling to find mental health resources for their loved ones, a group of five ladies realized there was a need for an efficient mental health resource hub in Montgomery. In 2017, the group decided to take it upon themselves to fill the gap in the lack of mental health guidance with Mosaics of Mercy, a nonprofit that helps the community navigate mental health and substance use recovery resources.

Quote of note: “Having someone that understands the mental health system and getting them to the right providers can be really life-changing for people who've been struggling,” Executive Director Jamie Freels-Runey said.

How it works: After joining forces with the Behavioral and Suicide Prevention Task Force, the county provided the funds Mosaics of Mercy needed to hire a group of licensed technicians and launch a database with over 2,000 verified resources offering a variety of mental health services. Along with a group of 10 licensed clinicians, Mosaics of Mercy works to connect individuals with appropriate services within 40 business hours.

New Caney ISD trustees approve new construction contract for $21.4M facility

On Feb. 9, New Caney ISD’s board of trustees selected a construction company to build the district’s new $21.4 million operations and transportation facility after canceling a previous contract for the project in December.

What happened: NCISD trustees have selected Houston-based Gamma Construction Co. for the project again, after originally selecting them Oct. 20.

On Dec. 15, the NCISD board of trustees voted to terminate Gamma Construction’s contract for the project after Spring-based ICI Construction Inc. filed a lawsuit in November. ICI Construction had submitted a bid during the district’s first round of bidding for the project.

In December, Scott Powers, executive director of public relations for NCISD, said the board opted to terminate the contract "for convenience, not cause." District officials also said they didn't anticipate the December contract changes to largely impact the project's timeline.

The project: Construction on NCISD’s operation and transportation facility is slated to wrap up by February 2027, as previously reported. The facility will have offices, workshops, warehouse space and meeting rooms.

Houston Texans to build headquarters, training facility in Bridgeland’s new Toro District

The Houston Texans are setting up shop in Cypress.

What we know: The NFL franchise is collaborating with Harris County Precincts 3 and 4 and Howard Hughes Holdings to invest $83 million into a new “Toro District” in Bridgeland, which will include new Texans headquarters and training facilities. Harris County commissioners approved the public-private partnership Feb. 12 following a closed-session meeting.

Spanning 83 acres, the mixed-use Toro District will create a destination hub of sports, entertainment, retail, dining, hotels and medical office space in Bridgeland Central, a rapidly growing 925 acres within the Cypress master-planned community.

Funding the project: Portions of the project will be funded through a newly created tax increment reinvestment zone, or TIRZ, which commissioners authorized during the Feb. 12 meeting. Harris County taxpayer dollars will not be used to fund construction of the Texans’ facilities, Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones said.

More details: The initiative will also allow Harris County to expand administrative services in the area, such as access to voter services, tax filing and vehicle registration, the commissioners said.
