City of Katy to launch reclaimed water system at Katy Mills Mall

The city of Katy and Katy Management District No. 1 are partnering to create a new reclaimed water system to provide irrigation water to the Katy Mills Mall and Katy Boardwalk District areas.

The details: The system is projected to produce and use up to 300,000 gallons per day in this first phase of the program, City Engineer David Kasper said. At full utilization, the reclaimed water system is capable of producing up to 885,000 gallons per day, which will be utilized as new users are added to the system.

The Katy Reclaimed Water System includes a new treatment and pumping facility at the Katy Wastewater Treatment Plant and 18,350 linear feet of new water lines up to 12 inches in diameter.

Looking ahead: The plan is expected to begin construction this spring, Kasper said.

360 Grills now offering outdoor appliances in Katy

Outdoor appliance store 360 Grills has opened its doors in Katy, owner Robert Maduro confirmed.

What to expect: The business offers various appliances including grills, fireplaces, pizza ovens, kitchen islands and accessories in several brands such as Kokomo, Napoleon, Blaze and Big Green Egg, Maduro said.

About the owners: Maduro said 360 Grills came about from spending time with his family and friends outdoors at cookouts. As a business owner, Maduro said he focuses on the “customer experience.”

PREVIEW: Harris County commissioners to hold Ben Taub hearing, discuss potential criminal justice changes

Harris County Commissioners Court will review more than 450 agenda items March 19, including a public hearing on the proposed parkland acquisition for Ben Taub Hospital's expansion as well as potential changes to the county's criminal legal system.

The overview: In compliance with Chapter 26 of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Code, commissioners will hear from community members about the proposed acquisition of 8.9 acres of Hermann Park to make way for a $410 million expansion of Ben Taub Hospital. 

Hospital officials say the expansion is critical to address bed capacity limitations at the Level I trauma facility. However, some residents are concerned with the potential environmental implications. 

Also on the agenda: Commissioners are also set to discuss potential operational and fiscal changes to county's legal system as a result of Senate Bill 9, a 2021 law that shifted bail-setting authority for certain violent offenses to elected judges.

Stay tuned: Harris County Commissioners Court meetings are held at 9 a.m. in Downtown Houston. The administration building is located at 1001 Preston St., Houston.

2026 Tour de Houston bike ride set for April 12

Tour de Houston will take place this year on April 12.

The popular annual bike ride will be produced for the third year by the Mayor's Office and Houston First, with the Apache Corporation, a Houston-based independent energy company, as the presenting sponsor for the 13th year.

What you need to know: This year's event will be the 19th edition of the popular tour. Registration opened in early 2026, starting at $50, according to a Feb. 10 news release. However, prices will increase after March 1.

The route will feature three distances, including:

  • A 10-mile family route, suited for riders of all ages and abilities
  • A 20-mile intermediate route, catered to experienced riders and fitness enthusiasts
  • A 45-mile training ride: ideal for riders preparing for the MS 150 in late April

The tour will begin and end at Discovery Green and Avenida Plaza in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center in Downtown Houston.

The local impact: Proceeds from the event will support the Houston Parks and Recreation Department's Re-Plant Houston reforestation initiative.
