Richardson ISD will raise custodial fees for organizations leasing district facilities as part of an ongoing effort to reduce expenditures across the district. Mike Jasso, assistant superintendent of district operations, said at the June 4 school board meeting that the district will also transition to a new facility rental platform that will streamline the leasing process.

What you need to know: RISD will increase its custodial fee for facility users from $20 to $30 an hour. This applies to nonprofit youth sports and organizations as well as other community and commercial organizations who lease facilities on RISD campuses, including auditoriums, athletic facilities, classrooms and libraries.

The fee change does not apply to school-sponsored organizations, who are typically not charged to use RISD facilities.

These changes will go into effect in fiscal year 2026-27, which starts July 1.

Hong Kong dessert shop Hui Lau Shan is now open in Richardson East Shopping Center, a company representative confirmed in an email.

The details: Hui Lau Shan started as an herbal tea trolley in Hong Kong in the 1960s and has now turned into a global dessert chain, according to the company’s website. Hui Lau Shan offers handmade mango desserts, prepared fresh every day, as well as fruit-based drinks and other sweets like mochi and coconut jelly.

The Richardson location is currently in a soft opening and is open from 4-8 p.m. daily.

The Willow Bend Mall is set to make way for the Dallas Stars new arena, and a larger sports entertainment center, following approval from Plano City Council.

Council approved a non-binding letter of intent from the Dallas Stars and a $15 million economic incentive with Centennial, the owners of Willow Bend Mall, at a June 8 meeting.

The details: According to the letter of intent from Dallas Sports & Entertainment LP, the parent company of the Stars, the arena to be constructed at The Shops at Willow Bend will host the Stars home games along with team practices, camps and “other professional hockey activities.”

What they’re saying: Of 12 Plano residents that spoke at the June 8 meeting, 10 opposed the Dallas Stars arena at Willow Bend Mall. Several speakers cited concern with traffic, noise, safety and the potential that the Dallas Stars could leave following the 30-year lease.

1. Legacy Drive widening
Project: The project will build two lanes of Legacy Drive from Prosper Trail to a future Prosper ISD middle school, widen the roadway to four lanes near the school and construct a water line.
Update: Prosper Town Council approved a $6.1 million construction contract for the project at a May 19 meeting, and construction is expected to begin later this summer.

2. McKinney concrete panel replacement
Project: McKinney’s Roadstock project will replace damaged concrete panels and restripe Eldorado Parkway and Virginia Parkway.
Update: McKinney City Council approved an additional $1.2 million for the project at a May 5 meeting, and concrete panel replacement has started along Virginia Parkway.
