TEEX opens $25M Public Service Training Complex at RELLIS campus

The Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service officially opened its new Public Service Training Complex on May 11 in Bryan, marking the completion of a $25 million project designed to transform how first responders and critical workforce professionals train across Texas.

The gist: Leaders from the Texas A&M University System, state officials and public safety partners gathered at the Texas A&M-RELLIS campus for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the facility’s launch.

State Rep. Paul Dyson said the complex represents a long-term investment in both public safety and workforce development.

How we got here: The complex was created to address a longstanding challenge in emergency response: Different agencies often train separately but must work together during real disasters.

Community Impact previously reported on the project's expected impact ahead of the ribbon cutting in an exclusive look and interview with TEEX leaders.

Before you go: The complex will support training for peace officers, firefighters, utility workers, investigators and other essential personnel to meet growing workforce demands.

Bryan ISD continues budget discussions with improved financial outlook

Bryan ISD says the district is on track to finish the current school year in stronger financial shape than expected, even as declining enrollment and uncertain state funding continue to shape planning for next year’s budget.

How we got here: When Bryan ISD adopted its budget, CFO Norma Friddle projected a $6.7 million deficit. Updated financial estimates now show a stronger outlook:

  • Original projection: -$6.7 million

  • After new state revenue: -$3.1 million

  • Current estimate: +$2 million

These updated numbers factor in additional state revenue, payroll accruals and non-payroll expenditures.

Friddle cautioned the final result could still fall anywhere between a $2 million surplus and a $3.1 million deficit.

Managing the impact: Friddle said the district expanded its budgeting process this year, meeting with campuses, departments, teachers, parents and student groups to identify priorities and review spending requests.

Stay tuned: No action was taken. Trustees are expected to revisit compensation options and consider adopting the 2026-27 budget in June.

Q&A: Catch up with the Democrats running for Texas lieutenant governor ahead of the May 26 runoff

On May 26, Democratic voters will choose their nominee for Texas lieutenant governor in a runoff election between state Rep. Vikki Goodwin, D-Austin, and union leader Marcos Vélez.

The big picture: The Democratic race for lieutenant governor is one of several statewide contests that advanced to May runoffs after no candidate received more than 50% of the vote in the March 3 primary election.

Goodwin and Vélez were the two highest-performing candidates in the three-person primary race, with Goodwin collecting 48% of the vote and Vélez receiving 31%. The winner of the May 26 overtime round will face incumbent Dan Patrick and potential third-party candidates in the November midterm election.

Some context: The lieutenant governor leads the Texas Senate and can exercise the powers of the governor if the governor dies, resigns, is removed from office or is absent from the state, according to the Texas State Historical Association.

At the polls: Texans can vote early from May 18-22, and runoff election day is May 26.
