Kemah secures $2.6M for future phases of 57-acre nature reserve project

Kemah recently made progress toward funding the development of a 57-acre nature reserve.

The backstory: The development, which first broke ground in 2024, was described as a “crown jewel” in the city’s parks master plan.

The details: Kemah City Council voted unanimously at its June 17 meeting to accept a $2.6 million grant from the Texas General Land Office to continue development and improvements at the 57‑acre nature facility, according to city documents.

What else: The reserve is being developed in phases, and in 2025 the city held a ribbon-cutting ceremony following the completion of phases 1 and 2, which included open space, entry monuments and a pavilion, but now current efforts will focus on developing the eastern portion of the reserve with phases 3 through 6.
