Pie Tap Founder and CEO Rich Hicks said the kind of pizza he ate with his young children made him feel lethargic, and if he knew if he ever started a pizza restaurant he wanted to do things differently.

“I wanted it to be uniquely differentiated, and we would be selling that Italian-style, artisan dough to Dallas,” Hicks said.

Hicks opened the first Pie Tap location in the design district at 1212 Oak Lawn Ave., Dallas, serving pizza with dough made from a 300-year old sourdough starter. Ten years and six additional locations later, Pie Tap is still using its original dough recipe, Hicks said.

On the menu: Pie Tap’s menu includes pizza, pasta, sandwiches, salads and more. Hicks said he wanted to keep the food “really clean” and use simple, high-quality ingredients.

Popular menu items include:

• Prosciutto pizza, which is made with prosciutto, medjool dates, date sauce, pistachios, arugula, house ricotta, parmesan and balsamic
• Hot pepperoni pizza, which features pepperoni, bacon, organic marinara sauce, fresh mozzarella, jalapeños and hot honey

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Frisco plans to invest $1.55 million to build a new cardiac rehabilitation gym near PGA Parkway.

What to know: The project will include exam rooms, locker rooms, waiting areas and staff space. Construction on the new cardiac rehab gym is expected to begin Sept. 1 and finish by Feb. 26, 2027, according to state filings.

Coming soon: PNC Bank

PNC Bank expanded its North Texas footprint in April, signing a lease for office space in The Tower at Hall Park. The new office will support the business’ continued growth and serve as a workspace for members of the bank’s corporate, commercial, and private banking teams beginning in late 2026.

Now open: Fifth Third Bank

Fifth Third Bank planted its flag for the first time in Texas with its new Frisco location in the Star District in April. The business plans to open 60 financial centers in North Texas over the next three years, offering personal and commercial banking at more than 150 total financial centers by 2029.

From 2020-25, more than 45,000 wildfires burned over 2.7 million acres of Texas land, according to the Texas A&M Forest Service.

Ahead of the 2027 state legislative session, lawmakers are looking into ways to better prevent wildfires from happening and prepare communities to respond when fires do start.

The background: In 2025, state lawmakers passed Senate Bill 34, which required the Texas A&M Forest Service to create a statewide database of firefighting equipment; established a council to improve emergency communications between local, state and federal agencies; and increased funding to help rural volunteer fire departments purchase equipment from $30 million to $40 million.

Quote of note: Sen. Kevin Sparks, a Midland Republican who authored the law, said more work needs to be done to increase wildfire preparedness across the state.

"As we move forward, our focus should be on a more proactive approach that prioritizes prevention and mitigation alongside response preparedness," Sparks said during an Aug. 11 hearing of the Senate Natural Resources Committee, which he chairs.
