Northside Community Park construction underway following Sept. 3 groundbreaking

Northside Community Park in Boerne officially broke ground Sept. 3, marking the beginning of the bond-funded project.

The park, which includes a skate park, trails and public restrooms, closed Aug. 22 to prepare for construction. Construction is expected to take 12 to 18 months to complete.

What’s happening? The nearly 40-acre, $16.5 million project will renovate the park to serve as a gathering place for the more than 700,000 people who visit Boerne’s green spaces each year, city staff said. The project is the largest parks and recreation development the city has undertaken.

The parkland was purchased as part of a 2007 bond election, according to city documents. Alongside city and 2022 bond funding, a $750,000 grant was awarded by the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department for the construction of the park.

Factory Mattress closing San Antonio locations after filing for bankruptcy

A chain mattress store is continuing to shut down its locations across Texas, including one in North San Antonio.

What you need to know: The Factory Mattress storefront at 21918 Hwy. 281, Ste. 101, near Stone Oak is set to close its doors “whenever inventory runs out,” a member of the company’s liquidation team said.

As previously reported by Community Impact, several Austin locations have already closed due to its parent company filing for bankruptcy earlier this summer.

Registered under Southwest Mattress Sales, they filed for bankruptcy through the Texas Western Bankruptcy Court, Austin Division, on June 7.

There are three more locations in and around the San Antonio area, so these are set to close in the same fashion, the liquidation team said.

Zooming in: Customers can choose from a wide selection of mattresses, bed frames, lounge chairs and pillow accessories at Factory Mattress, according to their website.

Texas General Land Office acquires Menger Hotel, Crockett Hotel

On Aug. 26, the Texas General Land Office, in partnership with Rockbridge and the Alamo Trust Inc., announced that it acquired the Menger Hotel and The Crockett Hotel.

The overview: According to a news release, the purchase will strengthen the visitor experience at The Alamo and is in line with the Alamo Plan. The plan includes building the Alamo District, which includes a new museum, new exhibits and buildings that will reshape visitors’ perception of The Alamo.

The two properties have not been available for purchase in decades and sit adjacent to the Alamo grounds. Both hotels stand on land that once formed part of the agricultural fields of Mission San Antonio de Valero, the 18th-century Spanish mission that would later become known as The Alamo, according to a news release.

Since 1859, the Menger Hotel has been The Alamo's next-door neighbor. The hotel has welcomed a long line of U.S. presidents, national leaders and cultural icons. The hotel bar is also the site where future president Theodore Roosevelt recruited his Rough Riders.
