Latino-owned meat market Casa Prime Premium Meats is slated to begin slicing cuts in Cypress come Fall 2026, per a social media announcement.

The details: According to the announcement, Casa Prime plans to house meat and drink selections in areas including:

• 20-foot long meat counter

• Walk-in beer cooler

• Fine wine rack

Casa Prime's meat cuts include ribeyes, New York strips, beef ribs and tomahawks, per the announcement.

The Harris County Emergency Services District No. 9 board of commissioners proposed a fiscal year 2026-27 property tax rate of $0.045 per $100 of valuation during the Aug. 27 regular meeting in a 3-2 vote with Commissioners Rob Paiva and Jaime Martinez opposed.

Harris County ESD 9 serves as a political subdivision and taxing entity that supports fire suppression and emergency medical service operations for Cy-Fair Fire Department.

The overview: Prior to its planned adoption date of Sept. 24, the commissioners have the ability to lower the proposed rate, but are unable to increase it, General Counsel David Manley said.

According to a tax rate notice, the district’s no-new-revenue tax rate sits at $0.038548 per $100 of valuation, which would generate the same amount of taxes as the previous fiscal year when comparing properties taxed in both years. Manley said these calculation do not consider new construction.

The Houston Audubon Society, founded in 1969, has renamed itself Birds Houston as part of a broader effort to clarify its mission and modernize its identity, according to a release from the organization. The organization also unveiled a new logo featuring the Yellow-throated Warbler, a longtime symbol tied to its conservation history.

What you need to know: The name change is intended to make the organization’s work more immediately clear, including protecting birds and their habitats, conserving critical land, providing education and nature experiences and advocating for conservation policies, the release states.

Also of note: The new name comes ahead of the eighth annual Houston Bird Week, scheduled for Sept. 19-26, with registration opening Sept. 1 for events across the Greater Houston area.

Democrat Gina Hinojosa, an Austin state representative, and Libertarian Pat Dixon, a professional engineer, are challenging Republican incumbent Greg Abbott in the Nov. 3 election. Abbott is seeking a fourth term in the governor's mansion.
