Humble ISD to host dedication ceremony for renamed Kingwood High School tennis courts

Humble ISD officials are hosting a ceremony to celebrate the dedication of the Kim Enocksen Tennis Complex and Kevin McElroy Courts at 6 p.m. Oct. 28 at Kingwood High School, 2701 Kingwood Drive, Kingwood.

The details: The dedication ceremony comes after trustees approved the renaming of the tennis complex and courts in February.

Enocksen, who was hired to serve as the coach of Kingwood High School’s tennis program in 1994, recently came out of retirement to head the program again after McElroy—who had served as head coach since 2021—died in early January.

Career history: During Enocksen’s first stint as head coach, she led the program to 16 district championships in team tennis and to the regional qualifier round in team tennis each of those seasons, according to agenda documents.

McElroy first joined the Kingwood High School tennis program as an assistant tennis coach in 1998 before eventually taking over as head coach of the program in 2013, district officials said.

Dozens of Texas agencies say they can't afford to make state-mandated budget cuts

In July, Texas' top elected officials directed most state agencies, appellate courts and public universities to cut spending by 3% in their base budget requests for the next two years.

The overview: Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and House Speaker Dustin Burrows said those reductions will help Texas hold a "strong fiscal position" by expanding property tax relief and maintaining public education funding when the legislature returns to Austin next year.

The issue: Dozens of agency leaders have warned that the cuts, totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, are not sustainable. They would cause Texas residents to lose "essential" services and lead to losses in state revenue, leaders said at the capitol and in budget documents.

Government institutions protesting the budget reductions include the comptroller's office, the attorney general, Texas' Cancer Prevention and Research Institute, state criminal justice agencies and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.
