Greater Heights Strategic Connections Plan to see final round of resident engagement in March

The Memorial Heights Redevelopment Authority will host two final in-person events this week to hear resident feedback on the Greater Heights Strategic Connections Plan, a grant-funded mobility and transportation study that has been underway since 2025.

Get involved: Residents, business owners and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the final phase of community engagement at one of the two following in-person events.

  • March 19, 6:30 p.m. at 1217 Morin Place, Houston
  • March 22, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at 701 Yale St., Houston
Online submissions for the survey will also remain open until March 27.

About the project: The Greater Heights Strategic Connections Plan aims to identify key infrastructure improvements that will expand access for individuals and families moving throughout the neighborhood via walking, biking, taking transit or driving, according to the project website.

After two initial rounds of community engagement, data collection and analysis, MHRA officials released 52.5 miles of recommended projects.

Leemoo, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream announced as newest Swift Building tenants

Officials with Radom Capital and Triten Real Estate announced in a March 16 news release the two newest tenants that will join the grand reopening of the historic Swift Building in the Heights later this year.

Van Leeuwen Ice Cream and Leemoo bring the project to 80% leased ahead of its tentative late summer or early fall opening.

What we know: Leemoo is a Houston-based premium wellness brand and juice bar. The website boasts that the juices and smoothies made in store have no added sugars, seed oils, emulsifiers, additives or artificial sweeteners. Juices, wellness shots, acai bowls, chia pudding and elevated toasts are also available.

More details: Van Leeuwen Ice Cream offers pints of ice cream in a variety of flavors, including strawberry, black cherry chip and Sicilian pistachio. Ice cream bars, sandwiches and scoops are also available.

One more thing: Delivery of the space is planned for Q2 of 2026, with tenant openings planned for late 2026, per the release.

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo adds dress code to code of conduct

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo officials have announced a new dress code for entry, beginning March 17.

Sorting out details: The Rodeo has provided an update on its code of conduct for guests, according to its website.

The following is prohibited:

  • Clothing with "objectionable" material, such as obscene language or graphics
  • Excessively torn clothing or visible undergarments exposing excessive portions of the skin
  • Clothing or other attire of affiliation with a criminal street gang
  • Clothing or apparel that intentionally obscures the face, unless worn for cultural or religious reasons or a medical condition

The context:
Since 1932, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has featured traditional rodeo competition and country music performers. Each year, the Rodeo hosts several events, including auctions, cookoffs and concerts, all with the goal of promoting Western heritage, officials said.

Fleet Week Houston ship lineup announced

The city of Houston and the U.S. Navy announced the lineup of ships for the first-ever Fleet Week Houston.

The event: Fleet Week Houston will bring U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard vessels to the Port of Houston on April 15-22. During that week, the public will have the chance to meet and engage with service members, learn about the ships' roles in national defense and take ship tours.

Participating ships include:

  • USS Kearsarge (LHD-3): an assault ship designed for multi-purpose operations, including troop transport and aircraft support
  • USS Minneapolis-St. Paul (LCS-21): a littoral combat ship optimized for operations in near-shore environments with high speed and agility
  • USS Cooperstown (LCS-23): a littoral combat ship sharing the same advanced capabilities for coastal missions
  • USCGC Edgar Culbertson (WPC-1137): a fast response cutter equipped for a range of missions, including search and rescue, law enforcement and port security

Houston Mayor John Whitmire said the city is excited to welcome Fleet Week.
