New station, department expansion aim to enhance Richardson fire capabilities

With Richardson city officials anticipating increased need for fire rescue and emergency medical services, several planned projects are set to meet that need. City Council approved Richardson’s new fire master plan in November, and several of the projects could be included in the city’s May bond election.

At a glance: Most notably, a seventh fire station in Richardson could receive some funding if voters approve the bond.

The new station is planned for north central Richardson and would cost the city more than $23 million, with $2.4 million for the first phase included in the upcoming bond package. The land has not yet been purchased, but Fire Station No. 7 would ideally be located in north central Richardson near the Galatyn area, City Manager Don Magner said.

Quote of note: “We’re meeting the need. We’re above water right now,” Fire Chief Curtis Poovey added. “By the time [Station No. 7] opens, we’re going to be bobbing for air and then we’re going to be breathing again.”

AT&T to build new 54-acre global headquarters campus in Plano

AT&T is planning to relocate its global headquarters to a new 54-acre campus in Plano’s Legacy District, according to a Jan. 5 announcement shared with employees by CEO John Stankey.

What you need to know: The new headquarters will be located at 5400 Legacy Drive, which is part of the former Ross Perot Electronic Data Systems campus at the intersection of Parkwood Boulevard and Legacy Drive. The city of Plano was in the process of redeveloping the site as the Texas Research Quarter, a planned life sciences and innovation district, as previously reported by Community Impact.

What’s next?: Stankey said in the statement AT&T is targeting partial occupancy in the new space “as early as the second half of 2028.” According to the city’s zoning website, the EDS campus is proposed for a zoning change from a planned development to commercial employment. The rezoning request covers 99 acres at the southeast corner of the intersection of Parkwood Boulevard and Legacy Drive, and will go before the Planning and Zoning Commission Feb. 2.

Dallas Love Field Airport will be gaining a new restaurant this month, though an opening date has not been determined, said Lauren Rounds, the external communications and marketing manager for the airport.

A joint restaurant containing IHOP and Applebees will be located on the public side of the terminal, between the Transportation Security Administration screening area and the baggage claim hallway, she said.

The diner will be where the former Bruegger’s Bagels was located, which closed in August, Rounds said.
