Cy-Fair EMS sees 91% increase in calls from assisted living communities

Cypress area firefighters recently reported an increased need for medical staff in senior living homes to decrease the volume of calls received by the emergency medical services system. Since 2020, the number of calls received from assisted senior living facilities by the Cy-Fair Fire Department has almost doubled, said Ahmad Abodeeb, district chief of EMS-clinical at the Cy-Fair Fire Department.

What’s happening? According to Cy-Fair Fire Department officials, calls from assisted living facilities increased from 1,383 in 2020 to 2,642 in 2025, an increase of roughly 91%. With the majority of calls received from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., Abodeeb said senior living residents are transported to a hospital 90% of the time.

Quote of note: “If you don't do CPR and manage medical issues, you're just going to forget how to do it, and it doesn't happen as often as we think, so repetitive scenario-based training is the way to go,” Abodeeb said.

Empire Homes to join home builders in Bridgeland

Howard Hughes officials announced in a June 24 news release that a new home builder is joining the Creekland Village area of Bridgeland.

What we know: Empire Homes will be developing a series of one- and two-story homes ranging from approximately 1,500 to 2,800 square feet in Creekland Village starting in the mid-$300,000 price range, officials announced.

In their words: “Empire Homes strengthens Bridgeland’s appeal for buyers seeking quality, design, and value at an important price point,” Jim Carman, president of the Texas region for Howard Hughes Communities, said. “This addition broadens choice in Creekland Village and reflects the kind of thoughtful growth that continues to distinguish Bridgeland in the northwest Houston market.”

Looking forward: Per the news release, construction on the new homes will start over the summer, with a grand opening of model homes occuring in the fall.

New seating at IAH gives travelers more places to sit, charge up

Travelers flying through George Bush Intercontinental Airport now have a few more comfortable places to sit, work and charge before boarding.

The details: Houston Airports recently added new seating near gates A14 and A15 in Terminal A, increasing seating in that area by 24%, according to a June 23 release. The update added 47 seats, along with workstations, group seating and built-in charging.

The new setup is meant to better fit how people actually use airport space, according to the release.

What this means: In Terminal A, the seating includes tray tables, charging access, work areas and group seating. The area also has large windows looking out over the airfield.

The seating was previously used in Terminal D before being moved and installed in Terminal A in May, ahead of a busy summer travel season and the 2026 FIFA World Cup travel period, per the release.
