Land purchase, tax abatement policy: 3 Southlake City Council actions you may have missed

From approving the purchase of land that could become a future park to reauthorizing the city’s tax abatement program for economic development incentives, check out three recent actions taken by Southlake City Council.

Council members approved each of these items during the June 16 meeting.

Dragon Stadium property purchase: Southlake officials unanimously approved a purchase and sale agreement with Carroll ISD for 14.87 acres. The property contains Old Dragon Stadium, which was declared surplus by CISD in 2023, according to previous reporting.

The agreement will see the city pay CISD $8.75 million for the property.

Southlake tax abatement policy: Director of Economic Development and Tourism Daniel Cortez said the city is required to reauthorize its tax abatement policy every two years. The policy, which outlines the conditions an applicant must meet to receive tax abatements from the city, was originally created in 2016.

Texas Water Development Board grant application: Southlake officials plan to submit a grant application to the Texas Water Development Board requesting nearly $4.13 million.

Crate & Barrel’s new store within Southlake Town Square is now open.

What they offer: The store sells a selection of home furnishings, including sofas, dining tables and chairs. Customers can also purchase kitchen appliances, floral arrangements, silverware, bedding and towels.

The Southlake location also has The Design Desk, which can help customers design specific rooms up to the whole home.

Saks OFF 5th to relocate within Grapevine Mills

Saks OFF 5th at Grapevine Mills mall is temporarily closed and will be relocating suites. 

The details: Saks OFF 5th will be taking over the previously empty suite from Neiman Marcus Last Call and plans to reopen June 26.

Saks OFF 5th sells men's and women's designer clothing, handbags, jewelry, shoes and accessories from Saks 5th Avenue at discounted prices.

One more thing: The Grapevine Mills Saks OFF 5th will be the last remaining location in Texas.

Six Flags Over Texas postpones opening of new 'Tormenta Rampaging Run' coaster

Six Flags Over Texas has postponed the opening of its new Tormenta Rampaging Run coaster due to commissioning and testing taking longer than expected, per a company social media post. A new opening date will be announced at a later time.

The details: The Tormenta Rampaging Run reaches 309 feet above ground and has a 285-foot drop, according to the Six Flags website.

The coaster will come with a new immersive, themed area with inspirations from Spain, according to a news release. Visitors can explore a fictional town called Rancho de la Tormenta Plaza and a new restaurant, Cocina Abuela. The restaurant will offer Spanish and Latin American cuisine like Spanish rice, chicken tinga and housemade guacamole.

The new ride is opening ahead of the Arlington amusement park celebrating its 65th anniversary Aug. 1, according to the release. The Arlington location is the company’s first location.

Yang's Smokehouse now open in Plano

The smokehouse’s menu has a variety of meat skewers like sliced beef, pork belly, lamb and chicken wings. Other menu items include grilled vegetables, fried rice, stir-fry, noodles and ribs.

Its “Adventurous Eats” section also offers spicy roasted pig brain.
