Labor Day Weekend Sidewalk Sale
Businesses throughout downtown Georgetown run specials and deals to celebrate the end of summer, and make way for fall and holiday merchandise.

• Sept. 4-7, during business hours

K-9 Kerplunk
This end-of-summer pool party at the Georgetown Recreation Center is just for pups. The event has three different time slots to accommodate dogs of differing sizes. Dogs must have a current rabies vaccination and be accompanied by a human age 16 or older.

• Sept. 12, 9 a.m.-noon

Georgetown Garden Show
Located in the Light & Waterworks District Plaza, the city of Georgetown event aims to celebrate the beauty of outdoor living. There will be live demonstrations and educational sessions on topics such as composting, tree planting, water conservation and beekeeping. Vendor booths will also sell plants, garden decor and other outdoor essentials.

• Sept. 26, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Southwestern University officials have adopted the second-ever five-year tactical plan, a guiding document that facilitates the school’s success in several key areas, including capital improvements and admissions.

What happened: The SU board of trustees approved the 2026-2031 tactical plan in July, which continues the goals of the first plan while placing more emphasis on attracting students to the university, according to a news release.

“This second five-year Tactical Plan reflects our commitment to providing an exceptional liberal arts and sciences education while ensuring that students can clearly see how their Southwestern experience prepares them for lives of purpose, leadership, and impact,” President Laura Trombley said in the release.

The three priorities of the second tactical plan include:

• Defining and delivering Southwestern’s distinctive value
• Ensuring every student thrives
• Strengthening financial, operational and organizational foundations

For the first time in over a decade, there is no incumbent in the Texas attorney general's race as Republican Ken Paxton runs for U.S. Senate.

Democrat Nathan Johnson, a state senator from Dallas; Republican Mayes Middleton, a state senator from Galveston; and Libertarian Tom Oxford, an attorney from Nederland, are running to replace him this November. Community Impact asked the candidates for their perspectives on Texas' open records laws, state litigation and other topics.

How we got here: Johnson and Middleton each won their primary runoff elections in May, Community Impact reported, while Oxford was selected as the Texas Libertarian Party's candidate during an April nominating convention.

Looking ahead: Early voting in eight statewide races and dozens of local elections runs from Oct. 19-30. Election Day is Nov. 3.
