How it happened: The PTSD Foundation of America was founded in 2008 as IMPACT 21 by Gene Birdwell to serve veterans suffering from combat-related trauma. In 2012, the organization created Camp Hope, a Houston-based interim housing and peer-led trauma recovery program. The Christ-centered organization has graduated 2,700 veterans to date and operates without federal funding, costing nearly $7 million annually.
The details: Camp Hope houses up to 108 veterans at no cost. At intake, 55-60% of these veterans are homeless, 90% struggle with chemical dependency and 70% struggle with unaddressed childhood trauma. Out-of-state veterans make up 45% of the population.
About the program: Veterans participate in the 6-9 month program voluntarily. Transition support services include:
Peer counseling
Identification of resources and community support
Network development support
PTSD, substance abuse dependency and co-dependency education resources
Family empowerment
Money management education
Looking ahead: The program plans to expand by offering a women's program, Camp Faith and peer-mentor certification courses.
