Construction of Roanoke Hotel and Convention Center to start in September

Two amendments for the design-build agreement for the Roanoke Convention Center and Hotel were approved during recent City Council meetings.

The overview: During the June 9 meeting, the Roanoke Convention Center Hotel Local Development Corporation and the council members approved amendment No. 3 for the project, which allows Brasfield & Gorrie to proceed with the full build-out for $97.5 million.

At the May 26 meeting, the two bodies approved amendment No. 2, which was an early work package for drawings and procurement of long-lead equipment for $1.7 million, according to city documents.

During the June 9 meeting, the changes approved show that substantial work will be achieved within 639 days after Brasfield & Gorrie is approved to proceed with work. The Dallas company listed a start date of Sept. 3 and a completion date of June 2, 2028.

The start of the work is a month later than listed in previous city documents and two months later than a Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing.

CI Texas
Screwworm updates: 5 US cases confirmed, including 4 animals from Texas

Three more U.S. cases of the New World screwworm were confirmed June 8, federal officials said. Four animals in Texas and a dog living in New Mexico have been infested with the flesh-eating parasite.

The background: The screwworm was largely eradicated in the U.S. in 1966, and the pest had not been seen in Texas in decades. The number of confirmed cases has slowly increased since the first detection June 3.

The parasite feeds on living animals, posing a particular threat to livestock and wildlife. The Texas economy could take a more than $1.8 billion hit due to a widespread screwworm outbreak, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated in 2024.

What they're saying: “These developments obviously represent a serious threat to our livestock and wildlife, but they haven't caught us off guard,” USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins said during a June 8 news conference in Kerrville. “We have been tracking this pest for a long time. We have fought it before, and we will do so again.”
