Richardson residents to see water, wastewater rate increases amid rising costs

Richardson residents are set to see water and wastewater rate increases this November as City Council considers new rate structures in light of rising costs for water and related services. Consultant Dan Jackson, vice president at Willdan Financial Services, presented several options to increase the city’s water and sewer rates at the June 8 meeting.

What you need to know: The city currently charges an $8 monthly base charge as well as a volume rate that is calculated per 1,000 gallons of water used. Most utilities implement a higher monthly base charge for larger meters—the standard residential meter is a three-quarter inch, while a large manufacturing facility could have 8- or 10-inch meters.

Jackson proposed that Richardson not only increase its volume rate, but also implement higher charges for larger meters, which he called “meter equivalency.” This means water bills will increase the most for the highest water users, pushing more costs on commercial customers with lower increases for residential users who typically have smaller meters.

Screwworm updates: 5 US cases confirmed, including 4 animals from Texas

Three more U.S. cases of the New World screwworm were confirmed June 8, federal officials said. Four animals in Texas and a dog living in New Mexico have been infested with the flesh-eating parasite.

The background: The screwworm was largely eradicated in the U.S. in 1966, and the pest had not been seen in Texas in decades. The number of confirmed cases has slowly increased since the first detection June 3.

The parasite feeds on living animals, posing a particular threat to livestock and wildlife. The Texas economy could take a more than $1.8 billion hit due to a widespread screwworm outbreak, the U.S. Department of Agriculture estimated in 2024.

What they're saying: “These developments obviously represent a serious threat to our livestock and wildlife, but they haven't caught us off guard,” USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins said during a June 8 news conference in Kerrville. “We have been tracking this pest for a long time. We have fought it before, and we will do so again.”
