Greenlighting growth: The Green at Katy Park to bring businesses and green space

Following Katy officials approving a rezoning request for a mixed-use district near the northwest corner of Morton and Katy Hockley Cut Off roads, developer Read King is taking steps to address an array of resident concerns.

What's happening: The Green at Katy Park development aims to bring green space, retail and restaurants north of I-10 and will be completed in two phases, officials with Read King said. Phase 1 will feature retail and restaurants, while Phase 2 is still undetermined.

Retail shops will be a major attraction of The Green, with hopes that the project will become a new “third space” for the Katy community to congregate and socialize, project developer Jessica Dennis said.

Looking ahead: A groundbreaking ceremony is anticipated for sometime in May ahead of officially beginning major construction, officials said.

All site work on the development is projected to be completed by late spring 2027, with tenants and businesses projected to move in and open soon after.

Harris County commissioners approve business accelerator program for local child care providers

Harris County Commissioners Court on April 16 greenlit a business development program for child care providers that aims to help more centers qualify for federal subsidies, part of a large-scale effort to increase affordable early education options in the Greater Houston area.

The action taken: The April 16 vote directed the county’s Department of Economic Equity and Opportunity to create an early childcare business accelerator program in partnership with the University of Houston and the Gulf Coast Workforce Board, the two entities developing curriculum for providers.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia, who proposed the action in partnership with Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones, said the program will provide mentoring and business support with the goal of expanding available child care seats and improving compliance with local and state regulations.

More details: Briones said the county will specifically focus on assisting providers who lack Texas Rising Star certifications—a quality recognition from the Texas Workforce Commission that’s required for centers to qualify for federal support. Only about 55% of Harris County centers are TRS-certified, she said.

Texans have until April 27 to register to vote in May runoff elections

Texans interested in casting a ballot in next month’s primary runoff election have until April 27 to register to vote or update their registration, if applicable.

The background: Texas’ primary runoff election will be held May 26. A runoff is held when no candidate secures over half of the vote in a partisan primary race.

Registering to vote: Prospective voters must submit a paper application, which is available online. Applications must be printed, signed and mailed to the voter registration office in a voter’s county of residence.

On the ballot: Various federal, state and local races will appear on the May 26 runoff ballot.

At the top of the ticket, Republican voters will pick between incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and state Attorney General Ken Paxton to determine the party’s nominee for U.S. Senate. The winner of that race will face state Rep. James Talarico, D-Austin, in November.

Something to note: The runoff election is separate from upcoming local elections, which take place May 2. Visit www.communityimpact.com/voter-guide for more information about those elections.
