Brushy Creek Sports Park reopens in Cedar Park following upgrades

Brushy Creek Sports Park is back open after the city of Cedar Park launched an improvement project earlier this year. The park reopened March 7 after being closed since Feb. 16.

What’s new: Randy Lueders, the city’s director of engineering and capital projects, said during a January City Council meeting that the improvements include:

  • Sports field fencing and nets
  • Softball field drainage and infield improvements
  • Parking lot expansion
  • Additional trails
  • Existing trail upgrades, including replacing decomposed granite paths with concrete
  • New maintenance building

The background: The improvements were funded by Cedar Park's 2022 bond package. City Council approved a contract in July to complete the improvements for about $1.7 million, according to previous reporting by Community Impact.

What's next: When the park reopened, some construction remained unfinished. As of the time of publication, the city had not responded to questions regarding when the rest of the work would be completed.

44,000-square-foot indoor sports club headed to Leander, Cedar Park

A 44,000-square-foot indoor sports club will make its debut in Leander next spring, said owner and general contractor Sravanth Poreddy.

A sneak peek: To be known as Reagan Sports Club, the facility will feature indoor soccer, volleyball, basketball, badminton, pickleball, taekwondo, yoga and a dedicated gym space, Poreddy said.

The sports club will outsource businesses for the yoga, indoor soccer and taekwondo offerings, which will each operate as separate businesses. The indoor sports facility will also allow visitors to rent courts hourly for sports like basketball and pickleball.

Looking ahead: August Construction is expected to break ground on the new sports complex in March 2027, targeting a fall 2028 opening.

Travis County unveils 10-year parks plan with 35 recommended projects

Travis County is one step closer to launching a 10-year plan to expand its parks system.

County staff presented their final draft plan to expand, strengthen and increase access to county parks over the next decade at a Travis County Commissioners Court meeting March 10. The countywide effort comes after voters approved a $276.44 million parks bond proposition in 2023.

The big picture: Overall, the Travis County parks department has developed a list of 35 recommended projects. Some projects may be short-term, completed in three years or less; medium-term, completed in four to six years; or long-term, taking seven to 10 years. Nineteen of these projects are recommended to be completed in the short-term.

The background: Proposition B included more than $200 million in bond funding for parkland acquisition along with funding for new trails and facility additions at the Gilleland Creek Greenway, Southeast Metropolitan Park, Onion Creek Greenway, Bee Creek Sports Complex and Arkansas Bend Park.

The county has been acquiring land to create a 70-mile trail system from Pflugerville to Manchaca.

Expansion could bring Desnudo, Rockman, austiNuts and more to Austin airport

As the expansion of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport continues, the city is looking to bring both local and national retailers to new terminal areas.

The details: The multiyear expansion, Journey with AUS, will add taxiways, a concourse, a parking garage and other improvements. Also included is the extension of the existing Barbara Jordan Terminal's west side and a smaller temporary terminal, Concourse M.

This month, city officials are slated to approve a new concession lease agreement that will bring new retail, food and beverage options to the West Gate Expansion area and Concourse M as the airport development program moves along. The deal could see travelers get access to products from local businesses such as Densudo Coffee, Rockman and autiNuts as well as national retailers Starbucks and Amazon.
