Council clears way for scores of digital ad kiosks across Austin

A plan to install dozens of digital advertising kiosks in public places around Austin advanced this spring. As framed by the city, the new kiosk are meant to help residents and visitors get around and access local businesses, as well as to promote civic messaging and transit information.

The details: While locations aren't yet finalized, most of downtown and parts of South, East and North Austin are now under consideration. Kiosks will be placed through a multiyear phased process with community outreach and notification of nearby stakeholders, according to Austin Economic Development. The scores of new kiosks are also expected to generate millions of dollars in revenue for the city.

The background: The wayfinding kiosk program was first requested in 2024 by Mayor Pro Tem Chito Vela, who supported the code change by highlighting his view that the kiosks will provide a benefit to transit users around Austin. Other officials and residents expressed reservations about the plan's impact on public spaces.

Crawfish KRAK House moves to Del Valle after Back 9 Bar closure

Crawfish KRAK House has relocated to Del Valle following the closure of its previous host site, Back 9 Bar.

What we know: Owner Kris Martinez is now serving Louisiana-style crawfish with sides, such as potatoes, corn and sausage, from his boil rig outside of Santo Patio—a Mexican bar and grill along the eastbound lanes of Hwy. 71.

He called his boils, which are available for purchase from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturdays, “straight-from-the-bayou spicy.”

What residents should know: Crawfish KRAK House will be in Rosanky on April 4 to compete for the Best Crawfish Around Award at Bastrop BayouFest—an event at 3004 S. Hwy. 304 that will feature all-you-can-eat crawfish and live music.

“If you’ve been waiting for a reason, this is it,” Martinez said in a social media post. “Pull up hungry.”

Flyrite Chicken reopens in East Austin food truck

Flyrite Chicken once again has a presence in East Austin just over a year after the closure of its brick-and-mortar location.

The details: Flyrite is now based out of a food truck at Stoney's Good Time Ranch on East Seventh Street. The location is just over a mile down Seventh from its former eatery that operated from 2016 through early 2025.

The food truck menu features original staples like The Cowboy chicken breast sandwich topped with cheddar cheese, bacon, jalapenos, house-made pickles and Hoss Sauce. New items for the bar location were added this year, like the creamy Dirty Mac topped with white queso, cilantro lime slaw and avocado salsa.
