Future roadway plans up for discussion in Bee Cave at March 24 meeting

Bee Cave City Council will weigh a number of changes to its future transportation plans at its March 24 meeting.

The details: The revisions under consideration are part of the city’s Thoroughfare Plan, which outlines goals, plans and projects for future mobility improvements in the area. The city is working with the Texas Department of Transportation as well as engineers with Freese and Nichols on the plan.

According to city documents, some of the proposed changes include:

  • Settling on a final alignment for a Southwest Collector road that connects to Hamilton Pool Road
  • Adding two neighborhood collectors between Bee Cave Parkway and the Skaggs Drive extension
  • Realigning multiple local roads

Diving in deeper: According to city documents, current traffic on Hwy. 71 and Hamilton Pool Road exceed capacity, and Bee Cave Parkway is approaching capacity. The creation of a Southwest Collector is intended to address mobility and safety in the area to improve traffic flow.

What’s next? City Council will meet March 24 at 6 p.m. to discuss the issue at City Hall.

Austin launches redesigned city website under multimillion-dollar digital update

Austin's redesigned city website launched early March 19, capping off a multimillion-dollar project intended to modernize and streamline the site.

The details: Austintexas.gov is now search-based, a layout the city called more intuitive for visitors by providing quicker navigation to the webpages or information they're seeking. The search tool was updated to add filtering options and other functions for more accurate results, according to the city, and is now the primary feature visitors are greeted with.

The redesign is the result of a multiyear, $5.5 million contract with Austin-based consultant Material Holdings authorized back in 2024. City communications and information technology officials previously said the redesign was needed to improve the website's organization and accessibility. Changes were long overdue, they said, as the previous version was overcrowded with thousands of individual webpages and proved difficult to navigate for some.

Texas’ primaries aren’t over yet: What to know about runoff elections

Texas held its primary elections on March 3, with Republican and Democratic voters selecting their parties’ nominees for scores of federal, state and local seats. Yet for some candidates, a major hurdle still remains before the November election.

The overview: Dozens of primary races are headed to May runoffs after no candidate picked up more than half of the vote, triggering an overtime round between the two highest-performing candidates.

The details:  Texas’ runoff election is set for May 26, the day after Memorial Day. Early voting runs from May 18-22, per the secretary of state.

State law requires primary candidates to receive more than 50% of the vote to advance to a general election, meaning a candidate must earn a majority of the vote—not just the highest number of votes—to win their primary outright. This rule means crowded races in Texas primaries and special elections frequently result in runoffs.

In those races, the top two vote-getters advance to a runoff.

Keep reading to learn about voting in the runoffs and who's on the ballot.
