Tomball Archive and History Center expands collections, seeks German translation help

The Tomball Archive and History Center is growing as staff work to preserve more local records and make Tomball’s history easier for residents to access.

What this means: During a May 18 Tomball City Council workshop, City Historical Archivist Allison LaRocca said the center has doubled its collections from three to six since its last update.

The archive, located on the Lone Star College-Tomball campus, houses historic city records and community-donated materials tied to Tomball and the surrounding area. As previously reported, the center’s goal is to preserve municipal records and community history while eventually making those materials easier for the public to search and use.

By the numbers: Over the last quarter, the center added 467 new digitized objects, moved materials into 64 archival-quality boxes and is managing about 30 gigabytes of digital preservation and access copies.

Also of note: The archive is seeking help from anyone who can read or translate German. LaRocca said some of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church records are handwritten in German and need to be transcribed.

What you need to know: The practice offers pulmonary care, lung nodule evaluations, critical care and sleep disorder evaluations, Christina Silva, a registered respiratory therapist with the business, said.

The clinic also offers in-home sleep studies and in-clinic diagnostic procedures administered by a registered respiratory therapist, including pulmonary function testing and testing to evaluate whether a patient may need supplemental oxygen, Silva said.

Also of note: Silva said the practice focuses on compassionate, personalized treatment plans, comprehensive evaluations and patient education to help people manage chronic lung disease.

“Our mission is to provide premier care and professional service, with excellent accessibility, that meets the surrounding area’s thriving spirit with an elevated standard the community can rely on,” Silva said.

The practice also offers follow-up care focused on patients’ long-term improvement, she said.

Cost to prevent a Texas water crisis has more than doubled to $174B, state says

Texas officials released a draft of their next state water plan in April, projecting that state and local governments will need to spend $174 billion in the next 50 years to prevent a water crisis.

The details: The three-member Texas Water Development Board voted April 16 to publish an initial draft of the 2027 State Water Plan, laying out what is needed to prepare for a future “drought of record,” when water demands are highest and supplies are lowest.

The $174 billion price tag is more than twice the cost projected in Texas’ 2022 state water plan, which was $80 billion.

The context: As Texas’ population continues to grow, water restrictions and shortages are becoming more common in areas throughout the state. At the same time, major companies are moving to Texas and communities are contemplating large data center projects, with some residents expressing concerns about high water use in the already drought-prone state.

The proposed plan includes 3,000 proposed water management projects and 6,700 strategies to increase Texas' water supplies through 2080.
