College Station graduates 30th 'Citizens University' class

College Station’s Citizens University celebrated its 30th graduating class on April 20, marking 30 years of educating the public on local government.

At a glance: Citizens University is a program run by the city of College Station to allow residents to learn and understand what the local government does and how it works.

In the program, residents spend time with a variety of agencies connected to local government to learn the fundamentals of being a government employee.

Learn more: The 2026 Citizens University session wrapped up in April and applications for the 2027 class will be opening later in the year.

Those who are applying must live in College Station to participate, come to at least nine of the 13 meetings and not be actively seeking political office.

Bryan City Council approves $65M for capital improvements for FY 2026-27

During the June 9 Bryan City Council meeting, council members approved $65 million worth of funds for capital improvements for fiscal year 2026-27.

What you need to know: According to agenda material, the approved budget will primarily go toward the following projects:

  • Travis Bryan Midtown Park
  • Street improvements
  • Drainage
  • Fire equipment
  • Animal shelters
  • Professional services

Digging deeper: As previously reported by Community Impact, the city of Bryan has made continual efforts to improve infrastructure and develop projects throughout 2026. Bryan Mayor Bobby Gutierrez said he is proud of the city’s growth and continued lowering of interest rates due to the ability to pay off the debt that the city accrues from these projects.

Before you go: Council unanimously approved the funds for the project, which will go throughout FY 2026-27.

Aggieland Humane Society pet pantry distributes over 40K meals in first year

Aggieland Humane Society is celebrating one year of its pet food pantry in June, a program that has helped local pet parents keep their animals fed during difficult times at no cost.

What’s new: Since launching in 2025, the pantry has distributed nearly 42,000 meals to pets across the region.

Get involved: Aggieland Humane will host two events in both Bryan and College Station on June 12, 2-5 p.m.

  • Pints for Pups: Murphey’s Law will host Aggieland Humane’s adoption event, featuring a photo booth and drink specials.

  • Dog Wash + Donation Drive: Employees at Rough Draught in the Northgate District will bathe your pup for the humane society’s donation drive, also featuring drink specials and adoptable pets.

Here's when and where to find your child's 2026 STAAR results

The Texas Education Agency released results June 10 from this year’s State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness end-of-course exams.

The overview: High school students who took the year-end exams this spring made gains in all subjects, TEA data shows. Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath said students’ academic progress was due to “focused instruction and high expectations” in the classroom.

What you need to know: Individual STAAR results are shared through the state assessment portal. Each Texas student receives a unique access code for their results. Families can find the code on the first page of their child’s report card or contact their school, according to the TEA.

Texas public school students in third through 12th grade take the exam each spring, and it is used to measure student progress and teacher performance.

What's next: The TEA is scheduled to release STAAR scores for third- through eighth-grade students June 16.
