Lob‑Lolly Classic combines pickleball and philanthropy in Bastrop

Pickleball players will hit the courts in Bastrop as part of a collective effort to help children heal—one paddle, one point and one purpose at a time.

The details: Double R Pickleball will host the Lob‑Lolly Classic from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Nov. 8-9 at the Bastrop Area Pickleball Association, 141 Tahitian Drive in Bastrop, in support of the Bastrop Children’s Advocacy Center.

The Bastrop CAC has provided social services for children in Bastrop, Lee and Fayette counties who have experienced abuse since 1992.

When an investigation involves violent crimes or abuse, the Bastrop CAC is brought in to help. Trained staff conduct forensic interviews with the children involved, while a family advocate is assigned to support the child’s caregiver and connect them with available resources. The Bastrop CAC also offers access to a food pantry and clothing closet for families in need.

In 2024, the nonprofit organization served 1,276 individual clients, provided 3,394 hours of therapy and performed 352 forensic reviews, according to Bastrop CAC officials.

New deal secures long-term future of Formula 1 event in Austin

Travis County approved a new deal ensuring the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix Oct. 16, which will now continue at Circuit of the Americas through 2034.

The big picture: The adrenaline-fueled event draws more than 430,000 fans annually—nearly 70% from out of state—and generates over $1 billion in economic activity across Travis County each October, according to county documents.

By endorsing the race, the county allows organizers to apply for state funding through the governor’s major events program, which helps cover event costs but does not include any property tax breaks for COTA. Since debuting in Austin in 2012, Formula 1 has generated more than $10 billion regionally.
