Grapevine council approves conditional use permit for North Texas Performing Arts

North Texas Performing Arts plans to relocate its Southlake location to Grapevine.

Council unanimously approved a conditional use permit for the nonprofit performing arts theater during the July 21 meeting.

The overview: The Grapevine theater is proposed within an existing 10,000-square-foot building located at 1040 Mustang Drive, which was formerly occupied by Movement Climbing Gym. The facility will have two 80-seat performance theaters, a rehearsal room, dance room, practice rooms and office space, according to city documents.

The 80-seat theaters will not be used concurrently, per city documents.

North Texas Performing Arts provides performing arts education for students K-12 through after-school classes, seasonal camps and private lessons.

Diving deeper: North Texas Performing Arts plans to put on 24-28 productions annually at the Grapevine theater, said Kelly McDowell, chair of North Texas Performing Arts management board for the Southlake location, which is expected to generate an economic boost for the city.

Looking ahead: McDowell said North Texas Performing Arts plans to relocate from Southlake to Grapevine in October.

Modern Market Eatery’s restaurant in Southlake closed in mid-June, according to a note posted on the door.

What's on the menu: The menu included salads, sandwiches, pizza, soups and bowls. Customers could also order juices, lemonades and fresh-brewed teas, according to the website.

Texas on track to see record-breaking power demand amid triple-digit heat

With large parts of the state under an extreme heat warning or heat advisory through July 23, the operator of Texas’ independent power grid is projecting record-breaking electric demand this week.

What's happening: As of 3 p.m. July 22, there were 90,027 megawatts of demand on the grid with 113,543 megawatts of power available, according to the Electric Reliability Council of Texas' real-time supply and demand dashboard. One megawatt of electricity can power about 250 homes during peak times.

This would break ERCOT’s current demand record of 85.5 gigawatts, which was set during an August 2023 heat wave. ERCOT spokesperson Trudi Webster cautioned that this week’s demand records are preliminary.

What it means: Texans should not expect a grid emergency during this week’s extreme heat.

ERCOT previously projected that demand would surpass 92,000 megawatts this summer, due to high temperatures, moderate rainfall and the growth of data centers.

This week's triple-digit temperatures come during the sunniest parts of the day, allowing the state to rely in part on solar energy to power the grid.
