$1.35M trail project underway in Schertz

Schertz officials are one step closer to opening a new trail and completing pedestrian crossing improvements along West Dietz Creek.

Some details: Schertz City Council approved a $331,319 agreement with engineering firm Halff Associates Inc. to provide design, engineering and construction management services for the West Dietz Creek Trail Project on Jan. 6.

The estimated $1.35 million project will consist of building a 10-foot-wide concrete, multiuse path along West Dietz Creek. There will also be pedestrian crossing improvements at:

  • Wiederstein Road
  • Savannah Drive
  • Maske Road
  • Schertz Parkway

There will also be benches, trash cans and water fountains constructed at key intersections, according to agenda documents.

The West Dietz Creek Trail project is part of the city’s 2025 Parks, Recreation, Open Space and Trails, or PROST, Master Plan, adopted by City Council in December 2024. The community identified trails as a high-priority need in the plan.

Fast-casual eatery Jason's Deli is celebrating its 50th anniversary by honoring the fresh food, people and communities that have defined the restaurant, officials announced in a Dec. 30 news release.

The background: The deli was founded in 1976 by Joe Tortorice Jr. in Beaumont and has since branched out to 114 Texas locations and 235 delis nationwide in 27 states, per the release.

What's new: According to the release, the eatery is celebrating its anniversary by spotlighting new soups during the National Soup Month of January, while also rolling out new items, including the Deli-Bration Cookie—a sugar cookie topped with sprinkles—and returning others.

In their own words: “Our 50th anniversary is about staying true to what’s made Jason’s Deli special since day one—thoughtfully prepared dishes, diverse selections and genuine care for the people we serve,” Clare Wilson, vice president of culinary and R&D at Jason’s Deli, said in the release.

The growing need: Community Impact will expand its Texas footprint in 2026, launching three new markets: Denton, Bryan-College Station and Allen. The expansion will bring hyperlocal news to 150,000 additional residences across Texas.

The demand for trusted, localized reporting is at an all-time high. Across Texas, many communities face shrinking coverage, leaving residents without reliable information.

“Right now, the only way the City of Allen can inform residents—outside of their website and social media—is through the water bill, which many residents don’t always see,” said Miranda Talley, Allen General Manager at Community Impact.

Similar challenges exist in Denton and Bryan-College Station, where rapid growth and evolving local issues outpace traditional news coverage. By expanding into these three markets, Community Impact aims to fill these gaps, keeping residents connected to local news.

Stay informed and connected: With the addition of Denton, Bryan-College Station and Allen, Community Impact continues its mission to strengthen Texas communities through reliable, locally focused journalism.

Residents can subscribe to the Denton, Bryan-College Station, and Allen newsletters to get the latest local news delivered straight to their inbox.
